The comment I will make is look how quickly David Johnson separates from #90 on Washington. One second he is at arms length and the next he is five yards away.

#90 was me playing rugby......never understood how people would get so far away so quickly, LOL. This helps the old ego a little bit.

Watching this again. I think #51 on Washington got caught watching David Johnson in stead of going after him. LOL.

Players used to say that about Barry Sanders, that they had to make sure they didn't end up watching Sanders and not going to tackle him. LOL

I heard him say he makes eye contact which makes them think he's going to run right into them.

Then he doesn't.

Lol..Awesome!

In Urbans blog he has this gif & commented that Palmer (I think) was watching this in slo mo & trying to gauge how many yards per hop he was getting. He concluded that it was 3-4. Pretty amazing.

My favorite is actually Josh Norman #24 coming in from the right, on the ground, waving bye-bye with his left hand. Doesn't even touch him.

Johnson is a special player. I do worry about those jump-cuts somewhat--other RB's use the jump cuts also but not with as much authority because it exposes the knees. He's fearless doing it. He's exceptional in just about every facet of his game. I'm obviously biased but to me he's easily the best back in the league.

Yes, but I'm saying he's much better. Zeke is good and I'd take him on my team, but even including him there's nobody close to the talent of DJ in the NFL at that position.

I think the separation in talent and ability is quite vast between the two.

No exaggeration, you'd have to go back a decade or more to find a talent like DJ at his position. He's that special.

Who is he comparable to?

He runs like AP but is so good at catching he's like M. Faulk... He is amazing in that he is so darn good at both. If we were winning he'd be an absolute superstar and the one guy everyone wants to interview..

I said true originally and deleted my post because I had to think. You're probably right. I can't think of any other player willing to stick it in the ground like DJ, put the knee out there, repeatedly, and accelerate. I really can't think of anyone who does that the way DJ does, but maybe AP is the closest.

It's probably moot.

You're right, he's so good at both and you're so right, if we were winning, like last year, he'd be all over the sporting news and on the cover of every magazine and website.

He reminds me more of Roger Craig than Marshall Faulk though. And frankly, I think Craig was a better football player than Faulk (I know that's blasphemy).

(Edit: Actually, Gayle Sayers used to plant like that. Had his knee wrecked, but that was on a sideline play, not from his jump-step)

In some ways he reminds me of Walter Payton. Like Payton he keeps a low center of gravity and a low pad level and his stiff arm is like Payton. The other way is he doesn't seem to lose any speed when he shifts from forward to lateral movement and then forward again which was something Payton was very good at.

When you put in the work and the time, you can make cuts like that.

Even playing rugby at 290lbs, I always had good feet, I cannot run fast, but I can move quickly.

So my point:

Jump cutting when my legs were 100% trained to play rugby, resulted in a defender whiffing on a tackle.

Jump cutting when my legs were not 100%, even 95%, resulted in me on my face, or doing 2 studder steps and getting tackled.

AND I DO 1 JUMP CUT, and it never ever looked like what we see above. Not 20 or whatever ridiculous amount David Johnson does in a row. Regardless, it takes a lot of power and explosion from your legs.

Point is, it is about preparation. He is young, and strong, he will be fine as long as he keeps his work ethic. Johnson may run like Marshall Faulk, but his personality reminds me of Curtis Martin, and that is a good thing. Curtis Martin was a great back, who had his best year as a running back at age 31.
