The Diamondbacks need to either trade for a starting pitcher or sign a free agent. Not many free agent pitchers out there but do you try and sign Curt Schilling to a one-year contract?

Schilling burned the bridge to Phoenix years ago. He is not welcome here.

Will they try? I think they'll put together an offer. Will Schilling accept? Probably not.

I voted no. This isn't some sort of reunion destination now, right? If we are to believe the tightness of this lockerroom, then signing Schilling would make no sense at all.

I voted no. I'd prefer trying to trade Chad Tracy and Carlos Quentin for someone like a Zach Grienke if something like thats possible. The D'backs have a log jam in the outfield, probably no need for Tracy (especially considering his injuries) and would like to get a young(ish) starter who's under contract for a few years.

I don't know how many teams will want Tracy now though. We may be in a Marcus Banks situation with him, his salary is somewhat high and he's been injured, we may have to add some other pieces in order to move him.

I think he faked the bloody sock.

I vote yes for 4 reasons.

One , if its a 1-2 yr deal it puts us at '09 with Anderson & Scherzer ready to come up.

Two, he is the best SP available in FA.

Three, we are going to possibly need two SP's to replace Livan & maybe Johnson because he won't play a full season. Use trade bait to get another SP on top of Schilling.

Four, we have new management who weren't criticized by Schilling, plus Byrnes was in BOS for the Schilling years,

huh? Do you mean Josh Byrnes or Eric Byrnes? And, how is that a positive anyways?

Count me as a 'Schilling hater'. That clown told the world that his Boston ring meant much more than his 1st ring for Arizona.

I think Curt Schilling is "a mouth", obnoxious and egotistical.

He's also a good ol' pitcher . . . still.

Should we sign him? As a #2 starter, he's better than what we had this year.

As far his "ring" comment, I didn't like it either. But you can't fault him for pleasing the fans he's playing in front of. If he went from Boston to Phoenix, I'm sure he would told his fans that it was important to him.

No.

He burned his bridge with the whole cruise fiasco and ranking his rings, etc.

Exactly. If he wins another ring with us he will say it means the most.

Sounds like Schilling doesn't think he'll be back, and that he's only looking for a one year deal. If that indeed happens, I'm guessing that Byrnes will at least give him a call to kick the tires a bit, but its probably a longshot that Schilling pitches again for Arizona.

I say why the hell not.... I mean when we are looking at next year, I don't think Scherzer will be ready, so why not bring in Schilling for a reasonable price.... Our rotation would be

Webb
Johnson
Schilling
Davis
Owings

It would be a hell of a story if Schilling and johnson both came back to help the Dbacks win another title.... And if they can return to 75% form (and by all accounts when Schilling is healthy he is) Thats a SOLID rotation of veteran pitchers...

Besides we need to bring a pitcher in, and regardless of your personal opinions towards him.... He may very well be the cheapest and best option for us while we continue to devolp our young guns in the minor leagues....

I vote yes, and hope to see him in sedona red next year....

Agree 100%. He is the best option out there. There aren't any young FA pitchers that you would want to sign to a longterm deal. The fact that he only wants a 1 year deal buys us some more time to develop our young guys while still staying competitive. And if we make the playoffs, outside of Beckett I don't think there is a better postseason pitcher out there right now.

I say no. We don't need two 40-something World Series MVPs living on our DL.

The more I think about it, the more open I become to the idea.

If Johnson or Schilling, or both, are around to earn their keep in the post-season -- look at Schilling's performance during this years' -- well, the two of them (along with Gonzo and Counsell and not much else in the way of Championship caliber players) got us a trophy. Without a closer. Or, even worse, a pretend closer.

Of course, RJ and Curt are not the workhorses they were then. But they are clutch players.

Johnson's scowl is gone. Schilling, despite his big mouth, is a team player. Neither would ever be called a cancer in the clubhouse.

Yup, I'm open to the idea. Whether one, or both, or even neither, of them benefits us in the post-season, it's worth the roster spot(s).

Let's go for it.
