It seems pretty clear that the Clippers will match on Q Richardson. It is also clear that Dampier is having a hard time getting deal that give him the kind of money he would like. There are reports that he may be forced to settle for a deal that is only at the MLE level, which is less than what the Suns are offering Q. Is it realistic to think Dampier might become a Sun?

Why do you keep saying that? About half the rumors say they'll match and half say they won't.

I think it's more likely that the Suns will wind up with Richardson than Dampier, but they have a chance at either.

I run hot and cold on it. The LA Times article and the fact that they aren't looking at any one else makes me think they will match. But they are the Clippers, so you never know.

Does anyone remember how quickly the Clips matched on Brand and Maggette last year? Maybe dragging it out to the end is their style...

Like I said in a previous post, I think it's their nutty way of discouraging teams of signing their future RFAs. Who's going to go after the Clips' players when they're going to silently drag it out and re-sign their player in the end?

Call it business as usual, but I can't think of more tight-lipped organization in the NBA. At least with GMs like Jerry West, they'll tell you what they're going to do with their RFAs up front. Think a few teams would've been courting Stromile Swift if West hadn't made that announcement? Even if the Clips don't re-sign Q, the Suns have no clue what they'll do and they've been effectively taken out of the game since that moment.

The Suns have been in the throes of salary cap death grip since Q signed that offer sheet.

You can look at it like that or...

you can look at it this way...

It also saved the Suns from throwing enormous salary-cap busting $$$ to Adonal Foyal, Brian Cardinal, or Etan Thomas.

It is everyone's style. No one matches until they absolutely have to, that way it messes with the other team's plans for FA

The thing in the LA Times article that threw me was Richardson's quote. Something like his worst case scenario isn't that bad.

I said in the beginning, the Clips wouldn't match unless Q budged and said he would be willing to return. Well, he just did it right there.......

It sure sounded like he is reconciled to them matching, which is different than how he sounded before. I think he felt insulted that the Clips went after Kobe so hard, but now has figured out that he will be back there whether he wants to or not.

I think the Clippers may still not be sure if they want to match Richardson.

Maggette signed offer sheet July 14, Clippers matched July 29
Brand signed offer sheet July 16, Clippers matched July 19
Odom signed offer sheet August 11, Clippers refused to match August 25

I think they knew they were going to keep Brand so they didn't wait long, but they weren't sure about Maggette. Don't know if they knew they would let Odom go right away.

I'd be interested in knowing how long they took with Miller. It would appear that they will wait the full term whether they match or don't match unless it is a no-brainer like Brand.

More Dampier rumors

The following is from dimemag.com:

"Then we heard that San Francisco sports radio was reporting that the Sixers and Warriors were going to pull off a sign-and-trade that would send Erick Dampier to Philly for Glenn Robinson and Kyle Korver.

That would be a great move for Philly, and before you kill Mullin for it, think about what Golden State would get out of the deal. Even though they lose a lot of height, they get a scorer in Big Dogg (when he feels like it) a shooter in Korver and Dogg is in the last year of his contract.

That’s a better deal than the garbage package that Isiah is offering of Nazr Mohammaed and Othella Harrington."

That is a stupid deal. There are reasons why everyone keeps trying to get of Robinson - three teams in three years. He plays no defense, hogs the ball, and isn't very good any more. Oh hey, he was also injured.

What earthly good does this do for GS. Korver is a very nice shooter and if GS wanted him, they could do it without taking on dead weight like Robinson and his $12 million contract. Now if they threw in Dalembert, I could see it, but otherwise "no way".
