One of the bright spots in Sundays 21-10 loss to the 2005 NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks, was the skillful play of third-year defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, who arguably played his best game of his professional career.

“I think sometimes it is the type of situations we put him in,” stated Head Coach Dennis Green. “We played the style of defense that probably fits his style more and I think we want to find a style that fits all eleven guys. If you can do that, you have a much better chance. He is an inside player, and inside players don’t have a lot of chances to make plays. We were playing an Okie front so he had more of a chance to go to both sides.”

Dockett wasted no time setting the tone on Sunday, on the first snap of the game, the former Florida State standout, sacked Seattle's quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, resulting in a 10-yards loss as well as racking up his fifth sack of his career.

“He has had a couple of other games where he has been outstanding and where he has had a fumble recovery, an intercepted ball or pick up scoop ball, but he played the run and the pass very well,” answered Green when questioned if last Sunday may have been Dockett’s best performance of his career. “I think in those two phases of the game, it may have been his most explosive game.”

Dockett’s aggressive play earned himself a career day as he recorded a career-high 12 total tackles and eight solo tackles.

“My defensive coordinator put me in some great situations and I took advantage of it,” said the 6-4, 290 pound defensive lineman. “I’m capable of playing like that every week, but the hardest thing in this league is to put back-to-back performances together and only the great ones do that, so it is a good challenge for me. I just want to take it all in and have a good season and do whatever I can to help the Arizona Cardinals win.”

Dockett also credits the return of defensive end Bertrand Berry for a lot of his accomplishments last week. Not only does Berry provide tremendous leadership both on and off the field, but his presence provides opportunities for Dockett in the middle.

Although the defense’s overall success in 2005 was evident on paper as they finished the season ranked 8th in league, it was even more impressive when one considers how the defensive line was ravaged by injuries. The lack of depth at the front four positions created several struggles, especially for Dockett While many fans and coaches have been impressed with Dockett thus far in 2006, he still can remember all of the criticism that he received in 2005. Instead of making excuses, the defensive tackle has used the negativity as pure motivation.

“All of the criticism last year was kind of disappointing,” admitted Dockett. “I did a lot of good things last year but people want to see big plays, but that wasn’t the position I was in last year. I think I trained 10 times harder then I ever did this offseason. I took it into my own hand. I took a lot of criticism last year so I said I’m not going to make any excuses I’m just going to take every practice to just get better and focus in on what I do.”

While Dockett’s number one goal is to have success as a team, in the back of his mind he knows he is playing for a new contract next season.

“I control my own destiny and I feel if I work hard and do all of things off the field to prepare myself during the week I should be alright,” confirmed Dockett.

This Sunday the Cardinals will look to improve to 2-1 this weekend when division foe St. Louis travels to the Valley. Dockett and the rest of the Cardinals defense will face a difficult task of containing a talented Rams offense.

“Steven Jackson has always been a key,” Dockett remarked on the Rams gifted running back. “He has been running the ball real well and they have an explosive offense. You give them a chance and they’ll take it to the house on you, so we have to play disciplined, especially at home.”

The Cards play the next three out of four games at home, and will look to set the tone from the first whistle in order to prevent St. Louis from jumping out to an early lead.

“I think anytime you want to dominate on defense you have go out there on the first play and set the tone,” said Dockett. “It is just the little things we have to do and stay up on them because down the stretch you can’t afford to make those types of mistakes.”

It was nice to see Dockett have such a good game ... he should be able to get some more pressure on Bulger this week with all the injuries the Rams have on their Oline ...

Pace is injured and they will have to double Berry ... I read somewhere else that their C is questionable also ..

I think McCullum is out for the year and Pace is doubtful.

I am slightly amazed that Dockett only has 5 career sacks.

Why? with the exception of flashes in his rookie year and last game he has stunk.

With the exception of his first year so has Berry who has either been hurt or ineffective. Wilson is extremely erratic and a liability in coverage. Clancy has shown me nothing. Okeafor hasn't done anything special either. Griffith is old and hits hard but nothing else. Macklin has been benched. EGreen is hurt. Hayes is showing flashes of ability but is still learning. Dansby hasn't had much practice time and we don't know how he will perform now.

In short our whole defense stinks. I just hope our offense can keep us in games.

I will disagree with this analysis. Berry had six sacks in seven games last season. He was hurt in the eighth game. That was a pretty good pace he was on before the pectoral injury. I would say that is good production out of a DE. By the way, he had two sacks against the Rams in Week 2 last season!

The Valley so low.
Low aspirations

...the hardest thing in this league is to put back-to-back performances together and only the great ones do that....

That statement in the article bothered me the most. No, the GREAT ones star in EVERY game except when they force a shift by the other team that damages the opponent overall--and I'd say they starred in those games, too. Reggie White did not have two good games and then take a vacation.

I really believe that Okeafer is the weak spot on our defensive line as he seems to get handled in both the run game and the pass game fairly frequently due to his size. I am not saying that he isn't serviceable, but between him and Dockett we just have been giving up too much up front. Hopefully, the light clicks on for Dockett from here on out and he starts making the big plays to go with his mistakes. I say "to go with his mistakes" because the way he is most effective is the way that leads to the most risks.

Dockett led the team with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops and a sack, and nearly dropped Shaun Alexander in the end zone for a safety. Coach Dennis Green said, "it might have been his most explosive game" as a professional, and Dockett took advantage of his opportunity to fire back at his critics of a season ago. "A lot of people want to see sacks and tackles for loss, but sometimes it's not built like that. Sometimes it's designed for other people to make plays," Dockett said. "When defensive linemen get greedy — where I want to make a sack, I want to make a play — then you blow an assignment and that costs us a touchdown. I've never been that type of player."

Dockett recorded 46 tackles and 3 sacks as a rookie. He had the same number of tackles and just half a sack last year.

The defensive front was often outmanned last year following season-ending injuries to tackle Russell Davis and end Bertrand Berry. Dockett gave some of the credit for his big game against the Seahawks to Berry's health and the presence of fellow tackle and first-year Cardinal Kendrick Clancy.

Just as some predicted. Dockett was doing his job last year. Clancy hopefully has taken the leash off him.

Hold up there texas. I agree that Berry hasn't shown up yet, but he tore it up his first 24 games as a Card.

Edit: and, I'll also agree that our defense hasn't been very good. But with Dansby in the line up more this week, I expect a good showing against a struggling rams offense.

That laugh was in reference to Clancy not Berry.

We'll see a better showing from the defense if Langston Moore gets more snaps against the Rams. No wait, he jumped offside last game, he stinks too.

Not true , it was the D that kept them IN the game last week.

Not true, it was Seattle's defense that kept THEM in the game. Our stellar defense gave up drives of 10 for 80TD,7-74TD,11-51 missed FG, 11-80TD(late in the 3rd Q) and
a 7 play drive in the 4th that took 4:15 off the clock. Meanwhile the Cards had one drive longer than 45 yards.

The Cards defense is ranked 26th in the league!

Our Defensive Line is small, our LB's are mediocre, our safeties can't cover, and our CB's give too much cushion.

Just go back and read the posts. You'll see.

Got a job for one of the Stat guys - Can you grade out DD over the first 2 games on plays (a) where he played next to Clancy and (b) where he played next to Moore? (Just wondering if it's all Darnell or whether his supporting cast is making him better this year).

Regarding the run game - I think we've historically had problems in two different aspects:

1. Against RB's adept at beating us outside, on misdirection or cutting back against the grain (Problem - mainly gap discipline and wrap up tackling)

2. Against between the tackles blasters like Brandon Jacobs (Problem - We weren't stout enough up front and would wear down as games progressed).

I think the arrival of Clancy, Moore and Watson (and also Jon Lewis) figure to straighten out Problem #2. This week, Linehan can run Steven Jackson up the gut ad nauseum and we should be tough enough and deep enough in the middle to handle that (and not wear down during the game).

I don't believe Jackson is as good a cutback runner as he is making that one cut and blasting through the hole. It will be a good test as to whether our upgrade at NT has panned out - not only against StL but during a grueling 16 game season.

(But even assuming we're OK inside, there will be other games where the other dimension of our run defense will be tested - i.e. can our LB's maintaint gap discipline, hold contain and break down/wrap up one on one)?
