Dodgers reportedly reach deal for Hudson

Oakland's Big Three is reportedly about to become the Big Two.

According to a report on the Oakland Tribune website, the A's have agreed to send right-hander Tim Hudson to the Dodgers in exchange for starter Edwin Jackson and second baseman Antonio Perez.

Citing a source close to the negotiations, the Tribune reported that the two teams have agreed to the trade and that it could become official Sunday.

A's GM Billy Beane reportedly had been trying to arrange a three-team deal involving either the Yankees or the Red Sox. When that failed, the beneficiary was Beane's former top lieutenant, Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta.

Hudson, 29, went 92-39 with a 3.30 ERA during his six seasons in Oakland. He was 12-6 with a 3.53 ERA last year.

The right-hander has one year remaining on his contract at the relatively bargain price of $6.75 million and was widely expected to leave Oakland — like former A's stars Miguel Tejada and Jason Giambi before him — as a free agent.

Jackson, 21, made a splashy debut for the Dodgers in 2003, outdueling none other than Arizona's Randy Johnson. But Jackson struggled with an elbow injury in 2004 and was unable to solidify his hold on a spot in the starting rotation despite being all but assured one during spring training.

Perez hit .296 with 22 home runs and 88 RBIs for Triple-A Las Vegas in 2004.

I know that having the Diamondbacks get him was nothing more than a dream, but it really hurts having him go to a division opponent.

It hurts having a GM who can't think outside the box. Think about this for a moment: Instead of spending more on another low 90's "paint the corners" starting pitcher (ala Armando Reynoso, Albie Lopez, Rick Helling, Elmer Dessens) Jr. could have traded Randy Johnson to LA (if he still wants to go there), Edwin Jackson then goes to Oak, and Hudson to AZ. Hudson, by the way, has been among the top 5 AL pitchers in groundball/flyball ratio over the past four years – a necessary trait for a non-power pitcher in BOB. (In other words, someone like Russ Ortiz.) Wouldn’t the Diamondbacks have been much better served by investing $6.5 million in Hudson rather than $6.5 million in Ortiz, and catching another low ball pitcher (no pun intended) coming off a bad season. The rotation would be:

1. Hudson - $6.5 million
2. Derek Lowe - ??? (although it can’t be much more than Ortiz’s)
3. Webb

The Diamondbacks could also take home a prospect or two from Oak and/or LA in the Johnson transaction.

We all know Joe Jr. simply is not creative enough to brainstorm a three way deal. I think the Dodgers, like the rest of baseball other than the Yankees, would rather have Huddy over Unit anyways. Derek Lowe may be a pipe dream if he's turning down $9 million a year as has been reported. Clement is likely to end up witgh the Halos so St. Louis is looking like they're coming up empty in their search for a #1 starter. Maybe losing out on Hudson will get them back in the mix for RJ.

Joe :barf: is a totally mediocre GM, and after the picture you painted once of him sitting at a table negotiating with Billy Beane and some other GM, maybe I am just as glad he doesn't try to be creative. He doesn't give up the farm - USUALLY - and if he tried to get creative I hate to think the real damage he could do.

Dodgers, A's deny Hudson deal is done

John Nadel / Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Tim Hudson might not be Los Angeles-bound after all.

Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta and his Oakland counterpart, Billy Beane, have talked extensively about Hudson at baseball's winter meetings.

But DePodesta denied a report that a deal was close to being completed.

"It has been overblown," DePodesta said late Sunday. "At times, it has been reported it was done. That was never the case. We continue to still talk with them.

"My understanding is they're still dealing with a lot of teams. They're exploring their options. They're not ready to do something yet."

Beane said the A's are "closer to a trade," but added he wouldn't say there's anything imminent.

"Don't assume who or what you think it is," Beane said. "I don't think a real big deal is going to happen and you can decipher what you think is a big deal."

The 29-year-old Hudson, 12-6 with a 3.53 ERA last season, recently set a March 1 deadline for the A's to offer him a contract extension or he'll leave as a free agent following next season.

DePodesta said he and Beane know each other so well that they can get something done quickly if it comes to that.

"We haven't even gotten to the point where we've made an offer," DePodesta said. "We've talked about specific players. We're on the same wave length in terms of players. I don't think there's much mystery on either side."

There shouldn't be, because the two are close friends and DePodesta was Beane's assistant in Oakland before taking the Dodgers' job last February.

"I don't think this is going to drag on indefinitely," DePodesta said. "I don't see it dragging on for two weeks. It's crazy how these things can go. Anything can come up."

DePodesta said published reports naming right-hander Edwin Jackson and infielder Antonio Perez in connection with a possible Hudson trade "aren't entirely accurate."

DePodesta said he met with Scott Boras, the agent for third baseman Adrian Beltre, on Sunday. Beltre, who hit .334 with a big league-leading 48 homers last season, is one of baseball's prime free agents.

"I have a pretty good sense of where they are," DePodesta said. "They want to get a better sense of where we are. We want to accommodate that."

DePodesta said he should know something within a couple weeks, adding an offer hasn't been made but will be shortly.

"This is a marriage both sides would like to continue," DePodesta said. "Scott and I both look at things the same way."

Boras said he has been assured the Dodgers have what it takes financially to afford Beltre.

"I think the Dodgers want Adrian," Boras said. "The Dodgers are certainly a place he's comfortable playing. That's why we're talking. It's mutual on both sides."

Boras wouldn't say how many teams are in the picture. He did say offers have been made. He also said he wasn't sure when an agreement will be reached.

"With a couple teams, I have a lot more work to do," he said.

Meanwhile, a day after saying there was interest in free agent third baseman Corey Koskie, DePodesta said the Dodgers are out of the picture.

"I think he's staying somewhere in the American League," DePodesta said. "I think we were fighting an uphill battle from the start."

The Minnesota Twins want to keep Koskie, but the Toronto Blue Jays are a distinct possibility. Koskie is a Canadian.
