Sorry to start a thread on this show with such a downer as the first post:

Daughter of TV Bounty Hunter 'Dog' Dies
05.20.2006

A daughter of reality TV star Duane "Dog" Chapman was killed in a car accident late Friday, a day before her father's wedding, a spokesman said.

Barbara Katy Chapman, 23, died near her home of Fairbanks, Alaska, said Michael Feeney, senior vice president of A&E television network.

Duane Chapman's Saturday wedding on the Big Island went forward as planned after the family consulted with a preacher and agreed to celebrate her life at the ceremony, Feeney told The Associated Press.

The star of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" married his longtime sidekick, Beth Smith, after being together for 16 years. The wedding is scheduled to be featured in an Aug. 14 episode of the show about Chapman and his tattooed crew of fugitive finders.

Barbara Chapman had not been expected to attend the wedding, and the circumstances of the accident were unclear, Feeney said.

She was one of 12 of the bounty hunter's children. She is survived by her mother, Lyssa Greene, and her 4-year-old son, Travis Drake-Lee Chapman.

Pair killed in CHSR crash battled addictions

By AMANDA BOHMAN, Staff Writer

The man and woman who died after their vehicle went off Chena Hot Springs Road on Friday were traveling at speeds in excess of 90 mph in a stolen 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Driver Scott Standefer II and passenger Barbara Katy Chapman--the daughter of reality TV star Duane "Dog" Chapman--are both 23 and of North Pole.

They spent the day at Chena Hot Springs Resort, said Trooper Jeremy Stone. Standefer tried to rent a room using a stolen credit card, Stone said.

The pair were headed toward Fairbanks shortly before 5 p.m. when the Pacifica went off the road at 34.5 Mile, rolled and slammed into some trees, landing upside down. Family members said the two, who were friends, struggled with drug addiction.

"(Barbara) had gotten herself into a terrible mess," Lyssa Chapman said of her daughter, the third of five of her children and the mother of 4-year-old Travis Drake-Lee. "She was trying as hard as she could to put her life back together."

The Pacifica had been reported stolen from a residence at 11 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road on Thursday, Stone said.

It's unclear why the vehicle left the road, which is straight and flat, before the crash. Troopers suspect alcohol and drugs played a role in the accident.

"There is no clue as to why they left the roadway," Stone said. "There are absolutely no skid marks on the road. They just went off the road, hit an embankment and launched."

Paramedics declared the pair dead at the scene, and troopers spent Friday night and much of Saturday trying to identify them because neither carried identification, Stone said. Standefer wore a seat belt, while Chapman was partially ejected from the vehicle. It's unclear to troopers whether she had been buckled in.

Standefer attended North Pole High School, worked odd jobs and was in and out of jail. He had battled drug addiction since age 11, said his grandfather, Gerald Standefer.

"He had the potential to be anything he wanted to be," the elder Standefer said. "The police should have got him and put him in jail and drug rehabilitation."

Gerald Standefer last saw his grandson in October, he said. Standefer's father is a gold miner in the Alaska Range, and his mother lives in Indiana. He is also survived by a younger brother.

"It's just a bad deal when a young man has so much potential, and he throws it all away," Gerald Standefer said.

Standefer was helping Chapman get a job as a night auditor at a local hotel, Lyssa Chapman said.

"I saw her three days ago," Chapman said Saturday. "She was stoked about it. I was kind of thinking maybe this was it. That she would change things in her life."

Chapman, whose father lives in Hawaii, was born in Denver, her mother said. She loved music, the outdoors and animals. Chapman attended school in Anderson after moving to Alaska with her mother in 1996. She dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

"She was a sweet girl," Lyssa Chapman said. "We were just waiting for her to come to us and say, 'I hit bottom.' We didn't know what else to do."

The accident occurred the day before Duane Chapman--the star of "Dog The Bounty Hunter"--was to wed his longtime sidekick, Beth Smith. The Saturday wedding in Hawaii went forward as planned after the family consulted with a preacher and agreed to celebrate Barbara Chapman's life at the ceremony, according to Michael Feeney, senior vice president of A&E television network.

Barbara Chapman had not been expected to attend the wedding. She was one of 12 of the bounty hunter's children.

I know this thread starts out sad, but I would like to talk about how much I enjoy this show.

It's not like a FAVORITE or anything, but whenever I happen to catch it on Bravo, I am totally watching it.

i'm not a huge fan of the show. not because its bad or anything, but because where it takes place. Hawaii is the most off the wall ridiculous place to have a show about bounty hunters.

Dog has got to be one of the charismatic people I have seen. He can go from a badass to preacher within seconds and pull it off!!

Not to mention how awesome would it be for you to have Ozzy do your intro music!!!

talk about irony he's arrested for jumping bail in Mexico in 2003. They were there arresting Andrew Luster a rapist, but Mexican law forbids bounty hunting and they refused to turn Luster over to authorities. So they got arrested, posted bail, and then fled the country and never came back for their court date.

So he basically got arrested for failing to appear which is what they do every day on that show, bring people in for failure to appear.

One story I just read said he served time for accessory for murder earlier in his life, I had not known that before.

Since when do we take orders from the Mexican government? Especially since the only reason he was down there was because Mexico refused to do exactly what the US has agreed to do; extradite a person for breaking a law. Regardless of the legality of bountyhunting in Mexico, it's perfectly legal and has a long tradition here in the US. Our government should have protected it's citizen in this case. It's not like he was down there killing hookers. This is how the convo between the two countries should have gone:

Mexico: Hello, US?

US: Hello Mexico, what do you want?

Mexico: We were wondering if you might extradite one of your citizens; he was involved in illegal activities whilst in our country.

US: Really, who is this citizen?

Mexico: Well, he goes by the name of Dog the Bounty Hunter...

US: Mr Chapman! We love that guy! He's been cleaning up the streets of our country for years now! One of the finest bountyhunters we have here in the US. What'd he do, kill a bunch of hookers?

Mexico: Actually, he was down here hunting a US criminal, a rapist who was down here hiding from US law officials. Bountyhunting is illegal here in Mexico.

US: Huh? So you want us to extradite Dog for bountyhunting and capturing a rapist?

Mexico: Yes.

US: (Long pause) Are you serious?

Mexico: Yes.

US: AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAHAHAAA!

Mexico: Please?

US: No.

Mexico: You don't understand, bountyhunting is a very serious offense here in our country of Mexico. We would like to try him in our court of law.

US: Well Mexico, bountyhunting is perfectly legal here in the US, and your courts and legal system are a joke. You wonder why your citizens are leaving your country? Look at how your government is running itself into the ground. Hell, you should be thanking Dog for taking a rapist off your streets, not condemning him. Until you actually have something serious to ask, like how we can help to fix your country, never call us again.

I actually agree with you I just thought it ironic that a bountyhunter was arrested because he jumped bail.

I would assume the US will not extradite him they probably arrested him just to make Mexico happy and will then release him with a warning or something.

Yes, and frankly, I'd fail to show for a court date in Mexico too; I've heard way too many horror stories about their prisons.

I like the show and watched it weekly, but damn did it start to get repetitive, catch some Crazy Hawaiin Ice heads and preach and get p-whipped by your wife and then talk about how important family is. Great show but once you've seen one you have seen them all

Very true. They had a Dog marathon over the weekend, and all four episodes I watched followed the same format- An extracurricular activity not directly involved with the meat of the episode, followed by the meeting in which they go over the hunt of the day, then they go hunting, catch the ice-head, throw 'em in the car and then get them to cry by talking to them about touchy-feely subjects like their kids or family. Once they take them to jail everyone gives big high-fives to everyone else on a job well done. End of show.
