PALM BEACH — About this time last year, Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirriani was portrayed by some media members as "on the hot seat."
"Nick Sirianni was, you know... I want to be on that hot seat he was on last year," Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel quipped Monday at the NFL owners' meetings at The Breakers.
Sirianni, of course, then led the Eagles to Super Bowl victory.
McDaniel feels the support of owner Stephen Ross.
McDaniel feels he is the right person for the job.
But he knows a fourth season without a playoff win would be less than ideal.
"You're not entitled to position and ultimately if it's deemed that someone, the organization would be best served with someone else, like I'm more on board with that than people realize," McDaniel said. "It's why I was able to not change when the same people that are pointing out my failures were hyping me up through success. This is the fastest changing world in sports. Again, Nick Sirianni was on the hottest seat."
McDaniel said Ross has not issued a specific mandate, such as lead the Dolphins to their first playoff victory this century.
McDaniel has a 28-23 record over three seasons, with two playoff losses.
The Dolphins have been 6th, 1st and 18th in total offense while he's been head coach and offensive play-caller.
"If we won two more games does that make me a different coach?" McDaniel said. "I think it's important for me to do my job the right way. That I never look at any sort of entitlement... Every year, to me, if you're not feeling heat on the seat, you have the wrong urgency. It should be that way every year. This is not my gift. It's an incredible responsibility that I only sign up for because I believe I'm the best person suited for."
