The Miami Dolphins are adding former Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints linebacker Willie Gay Jr. on a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Gay, 27, is the third linebacker to receive a deal from the Dolphins in the last week along with K.J. Britt, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tyrel Dodson, who was re-signed after finishing 2024 in Miami. Those three will likely compete for a starting role next to Jordyn Brooks.
That job belonged to David Long Jr. at the start of the 2024 season, but he struggled in Anthony Weaver's system and was eventually benched and later released by the team. Anthony Walker Jr. took over for Long but dealt with injuries, making way for Dodson to finish the year in the starting lineup. Walker agreed to a deal with the Buccaneers last week.
Gay was a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and started 47 games in four seasons with the Chiefs. He racked up five sacks, four interceptions, and 17 tackles for loss with the team and earned two Super Bowl rings along the way.
In his only season with the Saints, Gay recorded two sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 15 games and eight starts. Pro Football Focus deemed it Gay's most ineffective season, giving him a 43.9 grade, the worst of his career. Terms of his agreement with the Dolphins haven't yet been reported.
