According to the Denver Post, the Dolphins are currently negotiating a contract with free agent Alex Smith that would pay him $8 million annually.

The Dolphins are so desperate, after losing out on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, that they're now willing to significantly overpay a borderline NFL starter at near the level of franchise quarterback money. Matt Flynn only got $6.33M annually from the Seahawks. Smith isn't as physically talented as incumbent Dolphins starter Matt Moore, and he's certainly not worth more than Flynn. At this point, it's almost like the Fins are trying to sign a quarterback, just to sign a quarterback.

Oh PLEASE sign and then have Peyton go to Denver or Tennessee!

Hmmm... I'd argue that Smith is far more physically talented than Matt Moore. Was it their personal hygiene that made one the first overall pick in the draft and Moore going undrafted?

Manning gets contract for life from Titans.. Colts get first round draft picks for life from Niners for Luck! :)

You'd hope Manning ends up in Denver I would guess in this situation, because Hasselbeck would probably be a favorite to land in San Fran.

Good point on Tennessee.

However, would dropping down to the 29th pick (or whatever they are) this year be good enough for the Colts?

If he goes to Tennessee, I'd like Locker!

Indy isnt trading the pick. They didnt go through all the drama of cutting Manning if there was even a remote chance that they would listen to offers for the pick.

Its off the table.

How is Smith not worth more than Flynn? And since when is 8 mil a year a monster deal, and near franchise QB level money? Isn't that what he was trying to get from the Niner's?

Agreed. If it is a monster deal what was Kolb's deal?

I just hope they're not signing him first before Manning goes to the niners. The dolphins or anyone else might offer less if they aren't 'prying' him away from SF but rather picking up the discarded starter after Manning was signed. I could see in some circumstances it costing that QB a few million, and Condon might be trying to protect Smith.

But since we don't know who Manning will choose, if the ideal is Manning going to Den/Ten and Smith going elsewhere, then for that to occur at some point Smith needs to sign elsewhere.

Only way Dolphins get Alex Smith is if Manning goes to SF. Even if Fins pay more, Smith wants to be on Calif.

If this is true Alex Smith is very stupid. He will only sign with the Dolphins if the 49ers get Manning? DUMB

agreed. Very dumb. Showing loyalty to a franchise that isn't showing any to you is foolish

The Niners will have to at least MATCH this deal then, right?

Aren't you Rotoworld? Shouldn't you be telling us? :)

They already offered him 3 years 24 million. That's 8 million per year. So yes. The answer is yes.

Ive heard that those were the parameters of Smith's Niner talks but Ive heard conflicting reports over if that deal was ever actually on the table, or just that its waiting to see what happens with Manning.

I cant blame Smith for not trusting the negotiations with SF considering his agent reps Manning also.
