The Miami Dolphins have 10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, including in rounds 1, 2 and 3.
The Dolphins have big needs at cornerback, guard, defensive tackle and defensive end.
And if Miami decides to trade or release Tyreek Hill, suddenly wide receiver is a need.
General manager Chris Grier must nail at least two starters, probably three, in the draft.
Expectations are relatively low after an 8-9 season that ended without a playoff bid.
Dolphins fans have said repeatedly this offseason that they want Grier to address Miami's offensive line.
You can be assured Grier knows about your pleas.
I'm happy to take your questions for this NFL Draft mailbag:
Would you go BPA, or position of need for the 13th pick? - @ermicmc
Thanks for the question, Eric. I've been making the wise-crack online that everyone wants best player available until their quarterback is sacked seven times.
What I'm implying is that Grier must very, very seriously consider the best available offensive lineman at pick 13. The Dolphins seem most likely to go with some combination of offensive lineman, cornerback and defensive lineman in the first two rounds.
The Dolphins have too many needs entering this draft. Grier cannot overlook the needs if he hopes for Miami to compete in the AFC in 2025. To answer your question, best available player - but very likely best available offensive lineman or cornerback.
Do you believe the Dolphins will move on from Tyreek Hill this offseason? - @Cam3ronSparks
I believe the Dolphins would love to move on from Tyreek Hill.
But what is his trade value at this point? And the dead salary cap hit is crippling.
And then you need to add a receiver for Tua Tagovailoa to replace Hill.
A domestic incident is awful at any time, and the timing here is especially terrible.
It's 50-50 in my book. We don't know if owner Stephen Ross instructs Grier to move on, regardless of the on-field and salary cap ramifications.
Using past drafts as the baseline, how many quality starters does Grier draft in 2025? - @tbuckinftl
Using past drafts as a baseline, the answer is about two, perhaps a bit more.
The odds are, yes, that in Rounds 1, 2 and 3, Grier will land two quality starters.
This is where we remind you that losing picks in Tom Brady-Sean Payton tampering case hurts.
There is where we remind you that moving so many picks in the Tyreek Hill trade hurts.
There is a law-of-averages element here. Grier's draft record has been, well, about average.
Those who say Grier has a terrible draft track record are off-base.
But he needs a series of homers this April.
It will be a CB and DT or DT and CB. Both are bigger needs that G right now. Can always get a G, third round or later. - @Dolfan2334
It's certainly possible Grier delays addressing the guard need.
Not long ago, Miami used a third-round pick on Michael Deiter and a fifth-round pick on Isaac Asiata. Neither worked out very well.
Of course Miami can sign a veteran guard to compete with Liam Eichenberg to start. Either way, Grier should add another veteran guard before the season.
But we will be very disappointed at the Daily Dolphin if an offensive lineman is not added in Round 1 or 2. Perhaps Miami can add a second-round pick through trade and address all three needs with those selections.
It would be a fireable offense to select cornerback Jahdae Barron if Will Campbell, Kelvin Banks or Armand Membou is on the board. - @NetianNews
Let's say T/G Will Campbell of LSU and T/G Armand Membou of Missouri are gone before pick 13.
The most realistic choice we can see Grier having to make is between T/G Kelvin Banks or Texas and Barron, a defensive back from Texas or Will Johnson, a cornerback from Michigan.
That's where we see this headed. Would Miami try to project which guards might be available at pick 48 if they go with a corner in Round 1? Well, yeah.
And if all things are equal, we do believe Grier and Miami (like most teams) would value the first round cornerback over the first round lineman projected to begin his career as a guard.
Stay tuned.
I really think Tua would be better off with two really good TE’s as opposed to WR’s. I also think Waddle will step up big time as WR1. - @GhostOfTSN
If the Dolphins knew they were moving on from Tyreek Hill, they could draft a wide receiver like Matthew Golden of Texas in the first round, or another speedster in the second- or third-round.
But you do bring up an intriguing idea here.
What if Miami were to select George Kittle-like tight end Tyler Warren of Penn State at No. 13?
In that scenario, Miami would pair Warren and Jonnu Smith as complements to Jaylen Waddle and others. (We would see how the Hill situation plays out.)
But Warren would also have a positive impact on Miami's run game. And Miami's run game must take a big leap forward in 2025.
