Free agent Alex Smith will visit the Dolphins on Sunday.

Free agent Peyton Manning's drawn out decision-making progress is beginning to wreak havoc around the league. Considered a shoo-in to return to the 49ers as recently as two days ago, Smith is doing his best to create leverage in a situation where he previously had none. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are letting free agent Matt Flynn know they have other options if he refuses to accept a "modest" offer. Although Smith is hardly one of the league's elite quarterbacks, it would be a disaster for the 49ers if they swung and missed on Manning and then let Smith get away to South Beach.

Now we will find out whether San Fran pays a price for lending themselves to Tom Condon's "too cute by half" style of negotiating. Happiness in the end would be the 49ers having to start Colin Kapernick come September.

Whatever the Phins offer, I'll bet that Smith gives the 49ers an opportunity to match.

He would be foolish to do so. That organization has treated him like crap his entire career and just when it looked like he was finally going to be treated fairly they were pulling the behind the back trip to Raleigh. I would sign with Miami and get a new agent if I were him. Hope he does and Manning signs with the Titans. The alternative of Manning going to San Fran is nausiating.

Had the Cardinals not paid Kolb the $7M---do you think they would be hosting Smith? The trumper getting trumped???

Smith is pissed with the FO, and with Harbaugh's... "we're all equal shareholders here" - BS, but, I think he's tight with the other 52 players and last year's shared success. It's given this last point, I think he'd consider a matching offer.

Hope you're right!

Everyone knew there was a hangup in negtiations with SF. If the Cards wanted to drop Kolb and get Smith, a meeting was only a phone call away.

I have contradictory views about Alex Smith - one as the talented thrower in college. The other (fairly or unfairly) as having a bit of immature screw-up built into his DNA.

Harbaugh apparently pushed all the right buttons last year and the Niners got a talented thrower and reasonably poised QB in Smith. I was surprised.

Would I want him here in AZ? Ehhhhh? Probably not (but that opinion is expressed without a lot of certainty).

My biggest hope now, however, is that either Denver or Tennessee signs Manning and Harbaugh is left holding the proverbial bag full of nada.

It would be great if Manning signs with Denver and Smith goes to Miami.

This could all just mean the 49ers are fine with moving on with their #36 pick in the draft last year, Colin Kaepernick. Meaning they are perfectly willing to gamble on both Manning and Smith, because they like their fall back option.

that would be stupid on their part and hard to sell to that lockeroom that feels like they were one fumble away from the superbowl with alex smith in place.

aside from that if they lose alex and don't sign peyton, maybe harbaugh can slide in(sarcasm). i hope this works out for the worst. I enjoyed it when the 49ers sucked.

I actually prefer they work things out with Alex Smith and sign him to a long-term deal that's very expensive. Smith is OK but he isn't a quarterback that's going to keep us from winning the division and I would rather they were stuck with him.

Alex Smith illustrates perfectly (imo) how a great QB, can be rendered almost worthless if drafted by the wrong team/ wrong time.

The Cards have been ruining promising college QB's for decades... Smith just got drafted by the Niners at the worst possible time.

They finally get a coaching staff in SF that allows them to see a glimmer of his potential, and they screw it up by chasing old man Peyton.

I hope it blows up in their face.

http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2012/03/source-alex-smith-to-visit-seahawks.html

Miami isn't the only team Alex Smith is visiting. According to a source familiar with Smith's itinerary, the free-agent quarterback also plans to visit the Seattle Seahawks this week. It is not known exactly when the visit will take place. That, of course, raises the possibility that the long-time 49ers quarterback could face his former team twice a season.

Smith almost assuredly would leave the 49ers if they were to sign another free-agent, Peyton Manning, who is expected to announce his decision later this week. But there is a growing sense that Smith may not be back even if Manning goes elsewhere.

The Seahawks are in, too. This is getting good.

I'm liking it, and have become a huge fan of Peyton now, if he were to sign with the Titans or Broncos because it would be wonderful to see the Niners end up with a QB which no one can spell their last name without looking at the roster

I wonder if alex smith will get over this if peyton does sign in tennessee or somewhere else.

What is your serious opinion on this? Do you think he will decide to leave SF or do you think he will be ok with it and go back to chase another run at the NFC crown?

Money doesn't soothe all ills, but it sure helps.

Condon is simply covering all the bases for both of his clients. Smith is meeting with the Dolphins but I would put my money on Smith staying with the 9er's if Manning goes somewhere else.

Right, except apparently Smith has been talking about switching agents---and he might just have had enough of SF. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he is a Dolphin as soon as Monday or Tuesday.

The other thing is---Condon may have the inside scoop that PM is going to pick the 49ers and wanted Smith to get in the mix in Miami while the going is hot.

Pleeeeeease let this happen. If Smith walks, Manning goes to Tenn, Flynn is in Seattle... watch the Niners sweat it out over Orton and Hassellbeck would be pure comedy. A bright spot in a disappointing offseason so far.
