He was just on Path to the Draft or Total Access, with Charles Davis and I think Fran Charles. Regardless, this guy looks to be one hell of a young man. Polite, articulate and very driven. He spoke about how he cant wait to get to work on his ... pass protection???!!!! Really seems to be a team player and good guy that any team would love to have. Doesn't hurt that he';s pretty talented too.

I am going to go watch some more tape on him and maybe change my stance about the team taking him at #31.

Every interview I've seen/heard with him has been extremely impressive. Definitely a high character guy.

Md - As soon as I started doing research on the guy a month ago I came away smitten. So polished, so intelligent, hard working and just all around football IQ. Seems like the kind of high character guy Wiz looks for.

In the tapes notice how he cuts without slowing down and follows his blocks. Its amazing.

The only detractor I have seen on him is how good OL was. But even so I think if there is no trade he is the pick.

He reminds me of Robert Smith of OSU/Minny fame....

I agree. He's very impressive in interviews and does seem like a guy the Cards would go for. My concern is how much did the OL have in his success. It's much easier to look like a great RB when you have giant holes to run through. Another dark horse in the race is Andre Brown. He could be a major sleeper. I have a feeling that we'll go for English if Moreno and Wells are gone and then go Andre Brown with our 2nd.

You are agreeing with me?

:thud:

Thats the best post you have had all day:)

And yes I agree about the Andre Brown point if we go OLB in the first round.

From what I read from Don Banks today I wouldn't count on English being on the board at #31. Apparently his stock is going up among teams and even GB is thinking of him at #9.

Sorry but he doesn't have Smith's speed. Lived in Minneapolis and had season tickets there while Smith was the starting RB. He was a speedster with Ohio State and one of the faster backs in the NFL. Brown has just average speed for a back. Don't get me wrong he is still a very good prospect but lacks Smith's speed.

Donald Brown is a great guy. I am hoping he is the Cards pick if he is there regardless of who else is there at #31. I very easily see the Cards getting both English and DB in the first round after Saturday though. Which sucks in that I think Q is dealt Saturday.

IIRC he ran a 4.3 something at the combine and was one of the fastest backs to show.

His running style is what reminds me of Smith mostly but he is plenty fast.

I am not a college football junkie, but this kid intrigues me. Sort of like drafting a talented athlete out of Tennessee State in a no-name conference.

I think he ran a 4.51.

The guy has Crisco on his jersey and can really cut back and change direction on a dime.

Get on the Donald band wago, MD! I have bee here for a while now.

Donald Brown is exactly what we need. He's a great character guy, a good leader and they type of player that can become the face of a franchise. We'll need that if we lose Boldin.

Brown ran a 4.51 at the combine and I believe a mid 4.44 on his pro day. he's plenty fast enough for his style of running. I'm beginning to love this kid. He can Do it All, he's humble, but he knows what he's about. He avg. 161 yds. a game last year. If he avg 80 for us that's 1280yds. 41.5 vertical, for a RB! Good receiver out of the backfield...Combine Analysis stated,"Good speed to and through the hole. Best attributes might be his vision and stop and start ability. Shifty runner who can slide in and out of the hole at the POA and hit the seam before it really opens. Deceptively fast once he gets to the 2nd level." There was more positives and some negatives as well; negatives included 5'10" 210lbs might lack the frame to put on much weight, might lack the bulk and leg drive to be a true bell cow runner in the league, lacks elite breakaway speed, marginal size and strength as a pass blocker[not effort] ,and role william beatty had [LT]on his success. This sounds like nitpicking to me but I could be all wrong about Donald Brown..

I like Brown as well but I don't think of these statements as nitpicking.

Backs this size always worry me. It is a man sized game in the NFL and smaller backs have trouble surviving the constant pounding and hits from all directions. Some guys do it but I put my money on the bigger backs.

The pass blocking thing worries me. At least hes trying but he probably doesn't have enough lead in his pants to hold up against 250-270 lb. guys. You see backs just get bowled over all the time. If he had trouble in college he will have big trouble in the NFL.

Pass blocking keeps a lot of backs off the field. You just can't afford to have your back miss a block, or get run over, and get the the teams most important player, aka Mr. Warner, killed.

Legitimate concerns.

One of the other things the show's hosts brought up was the way he takes care of his body. He said how he learned a bunch from Tiki Barber, who was fantastic about keeping his body working. The kid hasn't had a carbonated beverage since his sophmore year of high school!!

Not neccessarilly true IMO. Anyone who is smart, athletic and eager can block. This kid is definitely all of those things. Now he just needs to be taught.

Hightower couldn't block a lick when we drafted him either, but he started to figure it out as the year went on.

Looks like he ran a 4.46 at the combine with a 4.38 as a high.

He is the fastest back in the draft of the Top 5. Unless Beanie is running at OSU's fast track of course:)

I disagree. Brown could get better no doubt but he just lacks the size to ever be a truely effective blocker.

Hightower is just a little bigger more physical type of player who has a chance to be a decent blocker. I also thought he hurt us at the beginning of last year because it became apparent after a while that we were running the ball when ever he was in the game.

Like I said I'm not saying that he can't get better but many of the things that make him a good running back hinder him as a blocker. Guys like him are used to getting by with quickness and shiftiness.

I look at a guy like Shonn Greene who is the same height but 25 lbs heavier and much more physical and a much better blocker in the passing game as a player I like.

I'm not saying that pass blocking is the #1 criteria for drafting a running back but it one of the things that should be considered.

It can limit a team when the back isn't a very good pass blocker. Like I said I noticed we were pretty much only running the ball when Hightower was in the game early last year.

With a player like Greene the defense has no clue if your running or passing. The guy is a big back that will draw defenders to the line of scrimmage because he can pound out 4-5 yards on a fairly consistant basis. But he also is able to effectively handle larger players coming off the edge in the passing game. It just makes it harder for defenses to diagnose what the offense will be doing.

Like I said it's not the only factor but one among many.
