Our most pressing needs are QB and OLB. Everyone talks about the risk of taking a Franchise QB this high (other then Luck who is back at Stanford).
Robert Quinn is the best OLB prospect by far but he carries risk as well. Not only was he out of Football this year but as a Sr. in highschool he had a brain tumor. I know little about this but I am not alone as noone knows much about the human brain and the effects of head trauma on brains that never had a tumor so there is risk with him as well. If we want to mitigate risk we go CB because the other D Linemen don't project to OLB as well.

I am in the group of people whom is worried about the risk of picking a QB so high. Then again I think a pass-rusher is just as big of a risk.

But there is no two ways around it. It is very very hard to get a pass-rusher via free agency, or a NFL QB.

If the opportunity is there at the time of the draft to pick up a pass rusher or QB you got to take that chance, IMO.

There have been top 5 pick busts at every position so you have to evaluate the risk of the individual player, not the position.

My fear is that if we pass on Quinn then it's a repeat of us passing on Suggs. As you said, it's possible to get those kinds of players in FA but rare.

DE Transitions to 3-4 OLB just might be the hardest position to draft in the NFL. Fails more times then any other position. Even the ones that do make it, 9 times out of 10 they dont have an impact until 2-3 years later. Doesnt mean you shouldnt take one @ #5 though.

Quinn shouldnt even be in the same breath as Suggs. Quinn has 13 Career sacks, Suggs had 44 and broke the single season record with 24 sacks his last season. Quinn is not even in the same league as a prospect that Suggs was.

We definitely need a LB more than a QB.

they are tough -- but i dunno about 90%.

I think there are lots of higher picked busts simply because "pass rusher" is as over-drafted as QB is

Agreed but these numbers are a bit misleading as Quinn played only 2 years and that 24 number really skews things. Suggs is a beast but I think Quinn has great possibilities.

The Patriots haven't drafted a QB in the first round since 1993. They seem to do just fine drafting defensive players instead and going with 6th and 7th round QBs.

:D

Edit: don't forget we have a chance to watch Von Miller tonight in the Cotton Bowl. And If I'm not mistaken he comes from a 3-4 defense so there is no learning curve. OMG touting an aggie. My ancestors are spinning in their graves.

I disagree on the comparison to Suggs though; the way they rush the passer is completely different.

Suggs played so far wide and ran around tackles. Quinn does run around tackles quite a bit, but he looks much stronger taking on blocks. He's also faced some very good left tackles (Constanzo) and more than held his own.

I just don't remember Suggs looking as dominant coming off blocks compared with Quinn. Quinn looks more than athletic enough to make the move to OLB, especially if his main responsibility is to get to the passer.

Numbers don't tell the story at all, at least without context they don't.

IMO Von Miller is going to have a HUGE learning curve. They guy gets by on speed alone, and gets out of position way too much.

Quinn IMO is ten times the OLB prospect.

still can't believe this team was DYING for a pass-rusher, suggs fell to them... and they not only didn't draft him, they literally ran as far away from him as possible, trading back to 17.

Well to be fair, Calvin Pace is a very good player now.

And if Bryant Johnson had panned out....that would have been a heck of a draft!

Bryant Johnson, Calvin Pace, Anquan Boldin, and Gerald Hayes.

as mac used to say... if and nuts and candy butts... or something ridiculous like that. i mean, what the hell did that even mean?!

and it took Pace four years, a position change and steroids to become a good player. he's just been ok since he was busted. Suggs is one of the best OLB in the game and has been since he came into the league.

Disagree. Dude looked like a pansy anytime someone even touched him.

He hasn't played Constanzo in a year, when he that dude was a Junior. He looked absolutely horrible against Ed Wang, Wang destroyed him and made him look silly, like a rag doll when ever he got his hands on him

OK lets take away the 24 one year sack total and Suggs still has 20 sacks in two years versus Quinns 13 in two years.

Well no one ever touched Suggs since he lined up so wide and just ran around Left tackles, miserable ones at that. :)

And the only NFL tackles he played against were the mighty Kwame Harris and All World Jacob Rogers.

Granted, not a hold lot to go on here, but Quinn is seen getting around Wang a few times.

A few plays you also see him get double teamed. Definitely nothing that shows him looking horrible and looking like a rag doll.

This is a very good video of Quinn, and shows why I'm so high on him. He's a gamble, but I like his upside a lot. He would fit what we're looking for perfectly IMO.

There is no way I would touch a guy that didn't play at all last year with the #5 pick. It just doesn't make any kind of logical sense.

I understand where you're coming from, but going drafting Quinn is a gamble on greatness. He may be a turd sandwich, yes.

But he could also be a dominant OLB in our system.

Well, if were going to "gamble on greatness" let's do it with the position offering the greatest returns: QB

How do you know that Quinn isn't the same type of prospect as Suggs? I'm curious how many games you have actually seen Quinn play to make comments that he is soft, plays like a pansy etc..

Sack numbers in college are so overrated. Clay Mathews Jr. had something like 6 sacks in his entire college career and he is now a pro bowler with double digit sacks in the NFL. Look at the numbers for Tom Burke (Cards 3rd round pick in 99). The guy had over 20 sacks his senior year at Wisconsin and didn't do squat in the NFL. DeMarcus Ware played at Division I-AA Troy State and had barely more than 10 sacks his senior year and he is now the best pass rusher in the NFL.

I've watched a bunch of North Carolina games and I can guarantee you that Quinn is the real deal. I also watched a bunch of Terrell Suggs games at ASU and in my opinion Suggs wasn't close to the complete player that Quinn was at North Carolina. Suggs had one task at ASU, rush the passer.

I completely disagree with your assessment of Quinn.

+1.

But, I will come back to this and find something I disagree with because I have been agreeing with C.Beef too much lately. :D
