Drag Me to Hell

Release Date: May 29, 2009
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Sam Raimi
Screenwriter: Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi
Genre: Horror
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of horror violence, terror, disturbing images and language)

Starring: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Jessica Lucas, David Paymer, Dileep Rao

Plot Summary: Director Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man" trilogy, "Evil Dead" series) returns to the horror genre with "Drag Me to Hell," an original tale of a young woman's desperate quest to break an evil curse.

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?

For something being touted as the return of old-school horror, I don't think a PG-13 rating helps it.

95% on Rotten Tomatoes with 132 reviews! That is incredible!

I'm definitely going to have to see this--at first I thought it looked awesome, but then I saw that it was rated PG-13 and it really deflated my motivation. But man, 95% for a horror movie? I don't know if that's happened before. The Descent (which to me is the best horror movie I've seen in at least 10 years) got an 85% when it came out.

The Descent? Seriously? I had to go look it up on IMDB just to make sure you posted about the same movie I remember. I do recall seeing parts of this movie, and it was just as stale and contrived as most of the horror movies any more. I wouldn't rank it as a good movie, and though I realize horror as a genre has been struggling, it's the best you've seen in 10 years? Zoiks, do I disagree!

Name one horror movie in the last 10 years that is better. The only one that come close IMO is 28 Days Later and there is very little separating the two.

Well, considering that, from what I saw, the Descent sucked, I don't really have to name any I will, though, for your benefit. 28 Days Later was about a million times better. Even 28 Weeks Later was far better. Shaun of the Dead was way better, and it was a spoof. The remake of Dawn of the Dead (I think that's the right one--the one in the mall) was a lot of fun and also vastly superior. The Sixth Sense, clearly. The original Saw, although I refuse to watch any more of them after a lackluster Saw II. Grindhouse, although it falls more into the Shaun of the Dead category.

Sorry, but the Descent didn't do it for me. Maybe you're claustrophobic? That might explain it, because I heard that the movie scared the crap out of people with that particular phobia. I just saw another cheesy monster/horror movie and said 'meh'.

If you get scared from Let the Right One In, more power to you, it is definitely a better movie than The Descent, I will say that, but I don't think I consider them anywhere similar as far as genre pictures go.

Admittedly I don't watch a lot of horror films. Most just make me feel dirty or annoyed. I thought this film was pschologically chilling. It may have impacted me more because I am a parent.

Great Movie

This movie is fantastic but in that tongue in cheek Evil Dead style. I laughed more than I was scared but it was still one of the better movies I have seen recently.

I really enjoyed the movie... It very much has a "final Destination" vibe to the movie...

Go into the movie.. turn your brain off, and enjoy the ride Raimi takes you on!!

I will say there is a review that ABSOLULTLY hits the nail on the head of the movie:

"Even in the grittiest horror movies there’s always a line they can’t cross. Drag Me To Hell stabs it, sacrifices it, buries it in the back yard, and then gets away with it by giving the audience a wink and a nod."

And it had some pretty DAMNED scary moments to boot... All in all, the wives may not love it, but guys if you go out of town for business, check it out, and if not, find an excuse to see it with some buddies, its CLASSIC!

Awesome. Kid was at the grandparents Friday after work so I and the lady friend went for an extended movie night and saw two freaking awesome movies in a row in this one and The Hangover. She had to do it, it was the deal we made for me having to watch that Girlfriends Past movie. Its rare that we both walk out of a movie and both really like it. Classic Riami and don't judge it by the previews at all, because they suck, but the movie is classic awesome tongue in cheek Riami with a few jumps in there.

I got to be honest I am not sure if the upcoming bigger summer blockbusters will beat these two much lower budget movies for me.

Chaplin I completely agree with you on Decent, the monsters weren't even the real monsters of the movie, they were secondary to the cave which was a character onto itself IMO, and I am not claustrophobic at all, not even a little bit, but this one made feel like I was. Great movie.
