So, I will randomly lose internet connection 3-4 times a day. A router reboot and everything is back to normal.

But here's are the oddities...

Internet lose is on all computers so I'm sure it's the router or modem.

BUT, if i have a VPN connection that will stay connected and I can even get email - sometimes - while not being able to browse.

Any ideas if it is the router (bout 4yrs old) or possibly something else?

It's quite bizarre and annoying.

TIA

Cox?

The same thing has been happening with me recently. I believe that it is Cox and their DNS servers causing the issue. I have swapped out the router and still experience the same problems.

Me too. Was thinking it was my router but in the back of mind thought it couldn't be. Thankfully i haven't replaced it.

Yeah, the VPN/email part was weird to me. My bottom line determination at the moment is: COX SUCKS. (insert some sort of dirty joke here).

Email and VPN both use different ports and don't use traditional DNS servers to connect.

I had this, I updated the firmware on my router and the problem went away.

I have Cox too (ok, that's sort of a weird/dirty joke) and mine also randomly re-sets. So, updating the router firmware should take care of it?

If you have Cox you should probably have a new DOCSIS 3 modem.

If you have an older modem you may have connection issues.

That being said; Generally, If the modem lights stay on where the internet light is solid it is most likely a router issue. First thing to check in that case is the firmware of the router.

Since I got a new Motorola Surfboard 6120 my cox internet has been solid except for a couple of obvious outages where tv and phone where affected as well.

I miss Qwest and being able to run my own web/email server from home w/ no blocked ports or in Cox terms, Business pricing :-/
I was Cox blocked!! LOL

Yup, Cox. Been happening for a about 2mo, but has really become a problem over the past month.

I have the Surfboard SB5101 which is DOCSIS 2, but I guess my question is, if it's Cox and a DOCSIS 3 modem could solve the problem why does restarting the router re-establish connection?

I'll check the lights on both next time it happens.

The modem has been running none stop since hookup 2yrs ago - that's why I figured router over modem, since the router is at least 4yrs old and maybe it's just getting tired.

The router has the last firmware update before it was discontinued.

I have docsis3 modem and still have the problem. Seems to happen late at night about once a week. There is a firmware update for the router so lets see if that helps
