TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Former Arizona State All-American shortstop Dustin Pedroia was named the 2004 Easton Redline/Collegiate Baseball National Defensive Player of the Year. It marks the second straight season that Pedroia won the annual award given to the top defensive player in Division I college baseball.
Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.), who is currently a top prospect for the Boston Red Sox after being selected in the second round of the 2004 MLB Draft, made only 11 errors in 277 total chances for the Sun Devils in 2004. The two-time first-team All-American started all 185 games of his ASU career and had a stellar .972 career fielding percentage.
In his first professional season, Pedroia played 42 games split between the Augusta Greenjackets (South Atlantic League) and the Sarasota Red Sox (Florida State League). He combined to hit .357 (56-for-157) with 13 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI. He did not make an error in his 42 starts at shortstop. Pedroia ended his ASU career ranked seventh in the record books with a .384 batting average (298-for-777), third with 71 doubles, fourth with 298 hits and tied for sixth with 212 runs scored. He became only the fourth player in ASU history to earn first-team All-Pac-10 honors in three straight seasons. Pedroia was one of five finalists for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award and was a two-time member of the USA Baseball National Team.
