Stat Standouts and Anomalies
Eric Byrnes currently has a career .244/.306/.415 line in 1,434 at-bats versus right-handed pitching. His current .343 average is due in large part to a .355/.394/.645 line in 31 at-bats versus righties thus far.
Jose Bautista, who struck out 110 times in 117 games and 400 at-bats last season, currently leads the majors in the most at-bats without a strikeout (26).
Randy Winn, currently occupying the 8th spot in the order for the Giants, has the most at-bats in the majors without a run scored or run batted in (25).
Oakland general manager Billy Beane must be agonizing over Shannon Stewart's current numbers – he leads the majors in the most at-bats without a walk (33).
While Beane might have been hoping for a bit more power out of Nick Swisher (he's got one extra-base hit, a double, in 24 at-bats), he probably isn't complaining about the fact that he's had at least one walk in all but one of eight games so far, and he leads the league with nine total walks.
Placido Polanco has been playing true small-ball for the Tigers thus far. All 11 of his hits have been singles, and he's recorded no walks and just one strikeout, resulting in his current .423/.423/.423 line.
Extrapolate Jose Reyes' current stats over 162 games and you get 208 hits, 231 runs scored, 23 doubles, 69 triples, 23 home runs, 185 runs batted in, 116 walks, 93 strikeouts, and 69 stolen bases.
Brandon McCarthy, who had allowed 30 home runs in 151.2 innings pitched entering the season, has yet to give up a home run, despite leading the league in hits allowed (15) in 12.0 innings covering two starts.
Scott Olsen is tied for the fewest hits allowed by pitchers who have recorded two starts (six), but also leads the league in walks issued (nine).
If J.D. Durbin allows no earned runs over his next 20.1 innings pitched, his will lower his ERA to 3.00.
