Ok, anyone know anything about these?

I saw one at Best Buy last night. 42 inch Samsung plasma EDTV, capable of doing 720p and it was $1999.

Now I'm interested. The picture was crisper than most LCD HDTVs I've seen and looked absolutely stunning.

It is my understanding that EDTV is a step down from HDTV, so you cant display true HD signals.

Visit www.uecweb.com. Best prices on awesome refubed Hitachi gear. I have a projection TV from them and will be getting an LCD soon.

EDTV is 480p. It is not HDTV

It can probably accept 720p and downgrade it to 480p.
This is sometimes also called HDTV compatible

HDTV ready is an HDTV display without a tuner.
HDTV has a tuner and can display OTA digital signals with a UHF antenna.

If it could display 720p it would be HDTV or HDTV ready.

Confused yet? :D

DVD would look great on an EDTV.

This is the TV I saw:

Circuit City

How the sales guy was explaining it is that it basically is a dithered down version of an HDTV signal. He said what I was viewing on it at the time was a 720p image, who knows if that's true or not. I will say it looked absolutely awesome next to the other TVs in it's class. It was night and day between this one and the $3400 LCD HDTV sitting next to it. The EDTV plasma abolutely smoked it.

Even if it's not 'true' HDTV, is there really that big a difference between HDTV and EDTV? They both look great.

(and they'll both support Xbox 360's HD output :D )

Is there a better TV in it's price range?

I have a 42-inch Sony LCD rear projection, and it's amazing.

Plus, costs around $1500 now...you don't need to spend $3000..

Yep 480p

852 (H) x 480 (V)

It sounds like a nice TV but it is not HD.

That TV has about 400,000 pixels.

I think 1080i is like 2.2 million pixels.

The level of detail on HDTV would be much higher.

I doubt you will find an HDTV flat panel in that price range. At least not yet.

You could get an HDTV ready rear projection (CRT) or a DLP for less but it would not be hang-on-the-wall thin.

I don't think you will find an LCD panel that size that is HD. The HD panels that size right now are plasma.

That's it...but the 1480i is rediculous...nothing is even broadcasted above 720p I don't think, so 1080i isn't even happening, much less 1480.

You can find it way cheaper though now....pricegrabber.com

Wow - that looks very nice. I need the directv HDtivo to come further down in price though. Its currenly $500 after rebate.

I was looking to pickup a Panasonic EDTV 42" plasma for $1700 I saw online but I decided to just wait for HDTV prices to drop further.

Then I started thinking of just putting a projector in basement and having an 8' screen!

oooh I wish I had a couple $grand to play with.
