Lest there be any doubt, the Ottawa Senators made it official Wednesday: The team will be “blowed” up, but good, in a rebuild that will take years, require mountains of patience and rest on the fortunes of players untested in the NHL. The team invited a number a media outlets to a boardroom in the buried sanctum of the Canadian Tire Centre for an announcement about the upcoming season and, in a way, to get a few things off its wounded Centurion chest. However, it wasn’t clear, 90 minutes later, what the news really was. It didn’t help that, maybe 15 minutes into the presentation, owner Eugene Melnyk excused himself, never to return to speak to a number of Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun writers
