LSU is a talent factory. Whether it's football, women's basketball, or baseball, the Tigers have a habit of churning out star players. Thursday is opening day across the MLB and eight Tigers made opening day rosters.
Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews were the most recent Tigers to make their Major League debuts. Skenes and Crews rose through the minor leagues at a meteoric pace after leading LSU to a national championship in 2023.
Skenes' rookie year was historic. He posted a 1.96 ERA and struck out 170 batters in 133 innings. The Pittsburgh Pirate won NL Rookie of the Year and was a finalist for the Cy Young award.
Crews played just 31 games but hit three homers and stole 12 bases. He hit .218 with a .641 OPS. Crews will bat eighth and play right field for the Washington Nationals on opening day.
An LSU baseball alum has made their MLB debut in 30 of the last 34 Major League seasons.
Before there was Skenes, pitchers Nola and Gausman accomplished similar things at LSU before going on to be impact starting pitchers at the professional level.
Alex Bregman is the biggest star of the bunch. The former LSU shortstop was a household name for the Astros at third base, helping the organization win two World Series. Now, Bregman is with the Red Sox.
DJ LeMahieu, a former MLB batting champ, remains with the New York Yankees.
Smith and Fraley, who played together at LSU, have both carved out roles for their respective squads. Fraley gives the Reds a stolen base threat while Smith adds value to the Rangers as a super-utility.
As for the current LSU baseball team, the Tigers are back in action on Thursday night vs. Mississippi State.
