Eisley finally snaps out of shooting slump

MINNEAPOLIS - Phoenix is short on experience, which translates to a lean bench.

The Suns' reserves are regularly outscored, a trend that almost worsened Tuesday when they were scoreless in the first half until backup point guard Howard Eisley's three-pointer with 33 seconds to go in a 110-95 loss to Minnesota.

Eisley, slumping since joining Phoenix, missed his first four shots Tuesday. But he hit five of his last 10, including three three-pointers, as starter Leandro Barbosa again struggled and did not play the final 18 minutes.

"I was able to make a couple shots but I still feel I missed shots I should have made," said Eisley, who is averaging 12 points in the past four games.

"It's a game we could've won. We've been close I don't know how many times but we've got to get over the hump."

Soft in the crunch

The Suns often fail in the crunch. But at least there often is a crunch time.

USA Today researched which NBA teams were the most clutch by figuring out records in games with margins of five points or less at the two-minute mark.

At 8-16, the Suns were just percentage points better than Cleveland's league-worst mark of 7-15.

To zone or not

The Suns saw what may be the NBA's best zone defense at Minnesota.

Phoenix used the look, too, as it does to hide youthful deficiencies.

"I don't love it," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I've never been a zone guy because I feel it's too easy to attack.

"We want to be careful about using it too much but we also want to win."

LMAO

Since when does 5-14 count for even an average shooting game?

D'Antoni feels it is too easy to attack a zone? Oh yeah that's why other teams never play zone against the Suns....

Well, he was 0-4 in the first half, but then shot 5-10 the rest of the game. That 5-10 isn't that bad.

Eisley taking 10 shots in a half is pretty bad, though.

I'm less concerned with his shooting, bad as it has been, than with the fact that he fails to get JJ the touches he deserves. JJ is not only the team's best shooter, he had 9 assists. Yet after scoring 14 points in the first quarter, he only ended up with 25 points for the game. His scoring dropped in the second quarter when Eisley was at the point.

Considering we were losing by a bunch in the second half for a little while, Eisley certainly played a role in getting us within 6 later in the game. You can't deny that.

I would hardly call going 5-10 in one half of a losing effort "breaking out of a shooting slump".

Actually Eisley's shooting has improved a little. Two to three weeks ago he was shooting 31% with the Suns. He is now up to 36%. "Old Dead Eye". :D

The problem with Eisley is that he has not been a good shooter since the 98-99 season. Since then his best season was at 41.8%. Two years ago he hit only 33.7%.

Overall, I would prefer he just didn't shoot or restricted himself to taking the ball to the basket. He doesn't need to shoot to be effective, but shooting badly hurts his entire game.

Everbody seems to always rag on Eisley. But, he's crafty and actually thinks he would be rock solid as a backup on a contender (Lakers, Mavs, Spurs).

His 36% shooting is a big turnoff. He is getting better, but it is pretty frustrating to watch him forget to run the offense and start jacking up bricks.

BTW, the Suns fans are actually pretty mild. You should read what the Knicks fans say about Eisley.

I agree. If he were just a little more selective about taking shots I would have no problem with him running the point for the Suns.
