El Paso professional boxers Jennifer and Stephanie Han have been two of El Paso's greatest representatives in the sports world.
On Wednesday afternoon at Han’s Oriental Martial Arts training facility in Northeast El Paso, the Han sisters were given a Congressional Record by U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat from El Paso.
In the Congressional Record, Jennifer Han was praised for her accomplishments as a boxer, mother and teacher of martial arts. Stephanie was praised for her success as a boxer, a mother and her dedication to public service as an officer with the El Paso Police Department.
Stephanie, Han, who is unbeaten with a 10-0 record, won the World Boxing Association lightweight title on Feb. 22 in El Paso with a first round knockout of Hannah Terlep. Stephanie Han is a former International Boxing Federation featherweight champion and finished her career with an 18-5-1 record.
"I'm humbled," Stephanie Han said. "Jennifer is my best friend and to get this honor is a great feeling. I hope to continue to represent my hometown of El Paso in a positive way and I'm grateful for all the support I've been given."
Han took 10 years off from boxing before return in in October 2021.
The Han sisters are the only world boxing champions from El Paso. The Congressional Record given to the Han sisters will also be sent to the Library of Congress on a permanent basis.
"To accomplish what we accomplished took hard work and we did it by supporting each other," Jennifer Han said. "I'm so glad Stephanie came back to boxing. I always had hoped to fight in the Olympics, but winning a world title and seeing my sister do the same is so fulfilling."
On March 6, the Han sisters were honored at the nation's capital when Escobar spoke on the House floor in reference to their contributions and accomplishments in women’s boxing.
"They are not just incredible representatives of the community, they are not just talented athletes, they are real role models," Escobar said.
Role models are something both sisters have become and that wasn't lost on either of them on Wednesday.
"You can always achieve your dreams and there is no limit on one's age," Stephanie Han said.
