I have an older NEC computer that my son had when he was in the Navy. He had to put a password on it to keep everyone out. This comes on at startup. The op is windows98. How do i shut this off. My father-in-law now has the computer and although I gave him the password I know he will have trouble.

Thanks

If it is a Windows 98 password just hit ESC to get into the computer. You can then search for *.pwl files. Delete the file the corresponds to the user name and the password is gone.

If it is a BIOS password (comes up before it will boot) then it is a little more tricky and some other help may be in order.

It may be as simple as getting into your BIOS menu and disabling the password option. Computers vary, but normally after entering the password you should see a "to enter setup, press F8 now". If you can get that menu up, you should see the option. It may say BIOS password, it could say admininstrator password, etc., but it should give you the option to disable it.

I think if you just change the password and leave it blank that should work.
