Elly De La Cruz and the Cincinnati Reds have high expectations going into the 2025 season, and he isn't afraid to share his and his team's lofty goals.
"For me (individually), I just want to be able to play every day − be healthy the whole season," De La Cruz said Wednesday at a Freestore Foodbank event with Pure Life water. "For the team, we want to make the playoffs, make the (World Series), win it all."
New manager Terry Francona, a three-time AL Manager of the Year who led the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles and the Cleveland Guardians to an AL pennant, will be key to the Reds taking that next step into postseason contention.
"Terry's a veteran guy. He has helped us a lot," De La Cruz said. "I think he's going to be good for us."
On a less-than-serious note, De La Cruz made his local dining choices known Wednesday after Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase somewhat dissed the culinary scene in the Queen City during a press conference March 18.
"The food's not the best, we can work on that," Chase said. "I'm from New Orleans, I'm not used to the food yet."
So, does De La Cruz have a favorite restaurant in town?
"My favorite is Jeff Ruby's (Steakhouse)," De La Cruz said. In 2023, he even enjoyed a victory cigar at the local steakhouse after hitting his first MLB home run.
But don't ask De La Cruz about Cincinnati-style chili.
"I didn't like it that much," he said. "But it's OK."
The Reds start their season Thursday against the San Francisco Giants at 4:10 p.m. ET.
