I saw this for the first time this weekend - orig 1987

It was a good flick. It's about a Brit kid growing up in Shang-Hi, China during the start of WWI. The **** invade & take the Americans 7 Brits into intern camps & it's about how he copes being separated from his parents.

Good scenery & John Malkovic plays a good role as his mentor.

Empire of the Sun is one of my all-time favorite movies. It is so sad to see that kid's transformation thru the war.

Recently watched it. This was a great, powerful movie.

Bale received a special citation for Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor from the National Board of Review — an award specially created for his performance in Empire of the Sun.

You could definitely tell Bale had "it" even as a kid. It seemed like you always new exactly how he felt in each scene.
