Kaleb Ergang picked a grand time to make a grand entrance.
The Adirondack Thunder signed the 24-year-old right winger fresh out of Ferris State earlier this week. On Saturday night, he scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime to defeat the Maine Mariners 5-4 in front of a sellout crowd at Cool Insuring Arena.
It didn’t take long for Ergang to get going. Just 57 seconds into the contest, the Spruce Grove, Alberta native slid a shot past Maine goaltender Nolan Maier for his first pro goal and a 1-0 Thunder lead.
Ergang then scored the overtime winner for his second of the night to seal a comeback victory for Adirondack. The goal came two minutes into the extra frame, and the Mariners never had possession of the puck in overtime.
After Maine tied the game 1-1 in the first period, Kishaun Gervis put the Thunder back out in front with his eighth goal of the year from Darian Skeoch at 2:46 of the second period for a 2-1 lead.
The Mariners scored the next three goals as Jacob Hudson, Chase Zieky and Lynden McCallum tallied in the second and third period to take a 4-2 lead at 8:15 of the third period.
Isaiah Fox wrapped the puck around behind the net and slid it by the right leg pad of Maier to pull Adirondack back within a goal, 4-3. The goal was Fox’s second since joining the team with the lone assist going to TJ Friedmann at 11:57 of the third.
With just 4:53 left in regulation, Josh Filmon put in his 17th of the year after a great pass from Ryan Wheeler. The goal tied the game at four with helpers from Wheeler and Brendan Less to eventually force overtime.
Ergang just completed his fourth season at Ferris State, where he served as assistant captain. He finished with 21 points (6-15-21) in 35 games in his final season with the Bulldogs. His 15 assists ranked second on the team and his 21 points ranked third.
In 109 career NCAA games with the Bulldogs, Ergang recorded 49 points (17-32-49).
He will certainly not forget Saturday night’s professional debut.
