Erickson not satisfied with offense

The Arizona State football team was sluggish on offense for a second consecutive scrimmage, leaving coach Dennis Erickson frustrated Friday night.
"We've got some talent out there offensively, and we're not executing like we need to," Erickson said. "We dropped footballs out there. We're a much better offensive team than we showed the last couple of days. That's what upsets me."
Like at Camp Tontozona on Saturday, the No. 1 offense needed more than an hour to score a touchdown on a 6-yard run by Jarrell Woods. The big play in that drive was a 23-yard pass from Rudy Carpenter to tight end Brent Miller.
Carpenter later connected with freshman wide receiver Kerry Taylor for a 47-yard touchdown, a play in which cornerback Travis Smith fell down. Taylor again was the leading receiver, with five catches for 73 yards.
"It's just one of those things where offense is up and down," Carpenter said. "You've got to try and find that consistency by the time the season starts. We've still got a couple of weeks to do that. Those wideouts have been running a lot. They're tired. Take it for what it is.
"The frustrating thing was we made a lot of the same mistakes. We had a lot of penalties and a lot of dropped passes. You can't make those type of mistakes. It's a scrimmage. That's why we do these things, to get better."
There was a chance to score much earlier, on the second possession in front of an estimated 5,200 at Sun Devil Stadium, after tailback Ryan Torain got around the left side for a 50-yard gain to the 11-yard line. The offense settled for the first of three field goals, from 31 yards by Thomas Weber.
Weber was 1 of 2 from 47 yards. Zach Richards made a 42-yarder and missed from 47.
Dane Guthrie, who had a sack and blocked a pass, is moving permanently from tight end to defensive end, Erickson said. The junior was switched to defense Thursday.
"I feel like I can help the team at defense," Guthrie said. "Anything to help the team. It's not individual. Honestly, yesterday I didn't see what they saw. I didn't know if I was good enough. I came in kind of nervous today. Then I turned out to make a couple of plays, and I felt pretty good about it."
The team captains are Torain, center Mike Pollak, defensive tackle Michael Marquardt and safety Josh Barrett.
The Sun Devils are off today and Monday, the first day of classes, with a practice in between at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

I just want to say this right now (and I know Mao is going to follow this up with a coke barb but its all good) after this season, Devil fans will rue the day they let Keller go and had Carpenter stay. I said it from the beginning, there is just something about Keller that makes him far and away better then Rudy on the field. I understand he had some off the field partying vices but so does 80% of that campus. It's not like its Cornell for gods sakes.
I think its very telling that Torian is named the captain and Rudy is not. I can already see the message board melt down now as Keller blow's up this year and Rudy struggles. I hate to tell you but its going to happen Devil fans.
At the same time I will say what i told a friend the other day. Erickson will have ASU in a BCS game within 4 years. I just don't think Rudy is going to be the QB to take them there......
