I'm not a subscriber so I don't have the full story, but here's the intro:

Livan Leaving?
Some of the names remain the same in the trade rumor mill: Octavio Dotel, Mark Loretta, Ty Wigginton, Jose Contreras, Jon Rauch. Heard a new and interesting name Saturday.

"Livan Hernandez," said a talent evaluator Saturday evening. "I'm surprised that nobody's talking about him, because he's out there [on the trade market]."

Since I'm in the We're Not Going To Win This Year So Let's Be Patient With The Young Guys camp, I'd be in favor of moving Hernandez for young talent.

I believe the draft picks the dbacks would recieve as compensation for another team signing Livan in the off-season would be of higher value then whatever they could get on the trade market in the next week.

Who else from the minors would be called up to replace him in the rotation? I mean Petit is already up in place of Johnson, is there anyone in AA or AAA that is ready for the majors?

i'm guessing that we would need to trade livan for a young, but major league ready prospect.

Edgar and Enrique Gonzalez could stand in, as could Nippert, since this would supposedly be temporary until Johnson gets back but none of those are ideal (and personally, I'm not counting on Johnson pitching for very much this year). The front office had internal discussions about moving either Juan Cruz or Brandon Lyon to the starting rotation before the beginning of the season, but I think its safe to say Lyon is staying put. That leads us to Cruz, who thanks to the work of Valverde, Lyon, and Pena has been underutilized yet outstanding in the pen this season. The two schools of thought on this would be A) don't move him because why mess with a good thing; or B) give him a bigger role since he has done so well for the team when called upon. If Livan were to be moved, I wouldn't be shocked to see Cruz given an audition with the starter's role.

If those are our options I would choose Nippert who I believe should be given another shot at the rotation.

Cruz is doing well because he's doing what he does well. He has been tried as a starter several times through his career and hasn't stuck.

Additionally if you move Cruz to the rotation he creates a bigger need for the role that he will vacate.

If you're gonna throw in the towel you might as well put Edgar or some other young player in the rotation.

Cruz needs to stay in the bullpen. Maybe give Nippert or Daigle a shot. Daigle has been pitching very well for the Sidewinders as a starter.

if we trade Livan and Randy can't make it back what are we left with as a starting rotation.

Webb
Davis
Owings (horrible of late)

We'll need to find 2 solid starters, in the 3 starters we'd have remaining we have an ace and 2 bottom of the rotation guys, if we fill in the other two starter spots with

Petit
Nippert
e.Gonzalez
e.Gonzalez
Daigle (VERY limited MLB experience 61 IP w/ era of 6.5!)
Cruz (how do we replace him in the bullpen?)
