UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger is a name to watch for the Indianapolis Colts in the upcoming NFL draft.
ESPN NFL draft analyst Jordan Reid selected Schwesinger as a non-first-round prospect for the Colts who would fill one of their more pressing needs.
"Schwesinger checks many of the boxes of prospects the Colts have targeted in the past," wrote Reid. "He started as a special teams ace and worked his way into becoming a starter, and his instincts and tackle aggression would be an immediate upgrade for the Colts."
Last season, Schwesinger was a very reliable tackler, making 133 of his 144 attempts, according to PFF. In coverage, he allowed a completion rate of 77% at 9.4 yards per catch with two interceptions and two pass breakups.
As Reid mentions, Schwesinger also brings special teams experience to the NFL as well.
This is a position for the Colts where depth is needed after losing EJ Speed and Grant Stuard in free agency. But more importantly, the Colts need to figure out who will be starting next to Zaire Franklin this season.
Perhaps that could be Jaylon Carlies, who brings coverage ability to the position as a former college safety. However, that shouldn't be assumed either, and a competition should determine who earns that starting role.
