Gamespot, the website for Electronic Gaming Monthly, did a comparison of the 2 games in several aspects of the game including Offense, Defense, Special Teams, AI, Franchise, Online, Other features, Presentation, Graphics, and Sound.

Personally, I disagree with quite a few of their opinions. So here are mine
Offense: Madden 2005 over ESPN. ESPN is lacking in offensive plays for their playbook.
Defense: Madden 2005 over ESPN by a pretty big margin. Madden added quite a bit to the defensive side of the game this year.
Special Teams: Madden 2005 over ESPN. ESPN seemed to go the old way of Madden while Madden added a whole new system, which adds to the difficulty. I never thought it should be that easy to hit a 55+ yard FG so I prefer the new system.
AI: Madden over ESPN. I have no idea what the hell game those guys were playing but the AI in ESPN is bad. I found it way too easy even on the toughest difficulty setting.
Franchise: Madden over ESPN by a LARGE margin. Madden's franchise mode was one of their strengths to begin and they added to it with the Storyline Central. ESPN's franchise mode is extremely faulty and has a long way to go.
Online: N/A ... I don't play online but I've heard good things about ESPN on this. Take that for what its worth
Other Features: Madden 2005 CE > ESPN 2k5 > Madden 2005. This really isn't really a large factor for any of the games due to novely wearing off pretty quickly but I do like the Collector's edition of Madden due to the ability to play older versions of the game. ESPN 2k5 gets a slight edge over Madden due to 1st person football.
Presentation: ESPN 2k5 over Madden 2005. Madden's presentation has become very plain while ESPN has gone to a TV format. Even with the dubbing of Chis Berman making me wonder when Godzilla is going to attack (Why are the model of Berman and the sound so out of synch?), I still prefer the ESPN presentation. Madden needs to go to a similar format.
Graphics: ESPN 2K5 over Madden 2005 by a large margin. Screen shots do not give that game justice. The graphics of ESPN are by far superior. The strong point of ESPN.
Sound: Draw. Both games make you want to use the mute button after a while.
Price: ESPN 2k5 over Madden. For $20, you can't beat the price of ESPN.
In short, I feel that they are both about equal depending on your preferences. Since I prefer play franchise and gameplay/difficulty over graphics I prefer Madden. If you prefer online play and graphics then ESPN is the game for you.
Feel free to criticize my opinions or do a breakdown of your own...
