Ex-Sun Ceballos arrested on suspended license charge

Cedric Ceballos, a former Phoenix Suns player, and current employee, was arrested Sunday when police contacted him at a Blythe, CA gas station, police said.

Blythe police booked Ceballos, 39, into Riverside County Jail on a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department warrant for driving on a suspended license, police said.

Ceballos, also a disc jockey for a Nevada radio station, was released the same day on nearly $26,000 bail, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Police said the gas station clerk called officers when he tried to use an invalid credit card to pay for gas.

A hearing is scheduled March 18 in Blythe.

The story doesn't say as much, but my guess is that the expired/overdrawn credit card was Cedric's only form of payment, and he just didn't realize it until after pumping the gas. If it were me, I probably would have stayed on site, explained the situation to the clerk, and then called the wife to have her come over with my checkbook, debit card, or other form of payment. I don't know how just having an expired credit card escalated to Ceballos having the police called on him and then being jailed.

The real story here might be that the gas station clerk actually called the police because "some big black guy" tried to pay for gas with an invalid credit card. Oh heaven forbid! Have the people of Arizona officially forgotten who Cedric Ceballos is, such that neither his name nor appearance resonates enough for them to do anything but have a "white-fright" moment and call popo?

I call Blythe, CA Blight, CA because it is this crap hole town right on the border. White trash and trailer parks is pretty much the extent of the town.

I do now.

So did Ceballos stray outside of his "zone of popularity?" It makes me wonder.

Also, they apparently don't care who you are in California. Here's an older story about 74 year-old Lakers owner Jerry Buss getting trotted off to jail after drinking and driving:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2886160

I guess it's just the case that whatever clout and power you have as a sports figure doesn't count for much in California?

I hear that you get 2 free murders after you complete your seventh NBA season.

Seriously, I'm pretty glad I don't live in California, if having an expired driver's license is somehow a jailable offense. In most states, it's a >$20 "fix-it" ticket on the first offense. And then even on the second offense, the absolute worst that can happen to you is that your car is impounded. This is all very fishy.

I don't know which is worse, these people assuming he was some random thug of color and jailing him for specious things like "failure to present proper identification," or their actually recognizing Ceballos as a former NBA player, and therefore as somebody they could fleece for a much-needed cash infusion for their crappy little beleaguered town.

its not a jailable offense unless it has happened multiple times... There has to be more to the story for there to be 26k bail.

But yeah, Blythe is a backwards hick/ prison town... On a side note, my good friend's father is the Warden at Blythe Prison...

Of course you’re making the assumption that calling the police is not standard practice for saying not being able to pay $80 worth of gas or so; depending on what it is to fill his vehicle up and also who is to say the fuel attendant was not also of color.

He probably was wearing one of his signature hideous sweaters. I dont know of anyone who wouldnt call the police if they saw him in public with one of them on.

The gas station attendant must have heard his horrendous rap song and wanted to get back at him

I don't think there's a gas station within 50 miles of my home that doesn't require you to go inside and pay first before pumping if you're not paying with a valid credit card at the pump. It prevents this exact problem. Even if Ceballos had a warrant out for his arrest, leading to his apprehension when popo was contacted, how does that explain the response of the gas station employee? It's very strange and there must be more to this story than what's in the blotter.

Also, if it costs $80 to fill your tank, then you're probably a really bad person. Leave the Humvee at home next time, Ahhhhnold. ;)

I wasn't aware that he was a DJ in Nevada. How does that work? That's one hell of a commute. Doesn't seem like Blythe is on the way to Nevada either.

The story doesn't say which way he was going. Maybe he was on his way to Indian Wells for the press conference tomorrow about the outdoor pre-season game next season. Maybe he needed to practice his outdoor player introductions.

Naw takes 60ish to fill the wifes Mini-van. (If I'm going to CA thats what I'm driving) $60 is easy to do at $3.00 a gal.
My car only has a 16 gal tank (67 mustang) Just as bad as a Humvee though, seems like I get 3 miles to the gal.

I'm just guessing Ced can afford soming nicer than my mini-van when crusing to or from CA. Then again I could be wrong if he can't pay for gas???

I still remember his heroics in the mavs victory over jordan's 72-8 bulls. I think it was that year. what an upset. that was probably one of the sweetest mavs games ever.

was that during the strike-shortened 80 game season?

Actaully I had a suspended license that I was unaware about 3 years ago and got pulled over in Scottsdale for driving a older car in a nice area. That is what the officer told me he pulled me over for. I was arrested, booked and released the next morning. I then took care of the the older ticket got the license reinstated and paid a $186 fine for driving on a suspended license. But I was still arrested and while being booked asked the booking officer about it and he says it is the arresting officers discrestion on whether or not to arrest the person.

I just had a CC of mine rejected. When I called them, it was the anti-fraud division that put a hold on it. I had never used it, and all of a sudden, since I knew I had a zero balance, I tried to buy some concert tickets in Lake Tahoe. Maybe something like that happened to Ced on the CC end of things. I could see where anti fraud saw a charge in Blythe and thought, hey this is unusual, flag that!

Wasn't it Lake Havasu where Ced got busted before? Or was it he was there and missed a Suns game? Anyway, the dude obviously doesn't travel well and should stay close to home. ;)

first, blythe is in cali. second, it's not anywhere near where ced's wife would be coming from with ced's checkbook, debit card, or other form of payment. a little reading comprehension helps here.

but i don't disagree with your potential assessment of the situation.
