Teams will be able to protect 8 players in the upcoming expansion draft, which, depending on whether it happens before or after the rookie draft, could have different results. It's a question, I suppose, of the Bobcats expansion drafting around their one pick, or picking based on need. In either case they will probably just take the best players available, I would think.

Prediction for the Suns protected players:

1. Stephon Marbury
2. Shawn Marion
3. Amare Stoudemire
4. Joe Johnson
5. Zarko Caparkapa
6. Leandro Barbosa
7. Jake Voskuhl
8. Mystery pick. Could be our draft pick, if it's after the rookie draft, or a free agent, or someone else already on our team(Jacobsen, DeMarr Johnson, Gugliotta, Scott Williams(if any of these players are even on our roster by then))

2004 Draft Picks will not be a part of the expansion pool - whether the expansion draft is before or after the draft - teams will only have to protect returning veterans.

If Googs is still around, he will not be protected. Doubtful Charlotte would pick up the contract, and if they do, have at em.

I think that Jacobsen would have the inside track on #8 if teams don't count their draft picks (or even #7 if they do). He's the player with the restrictive rookie contract.

DerMarr and Archibald are the only other players I could imagine the Suns might want to protect, of the players they have right now.

I was just thinking about this subject today.

Googs is a FA so he cannot be protected anyway, not that they'd want to. Hardaway will likely be unprotected, so this could be his last season here.
