Expansion draft

I was just wondering if the Suns are counting on Penny being taken in the expansion draft. Maybe that is the reason for not signing DerMarr.

4. JJ
5. Little Jake

7. Zarko

Its possible that the only viable player they want to make available is Penny. If they sign DerMarr to a contract (2 years) then they have to leave either C-Jake or DerMarr unprotected along with Penny. A new team would be more likely to take the younger player with a smaller salary and more upside.

It would be one thing to lose DerMarr after a year of developing him. It would be worse to NOT lose Penny because DerMarr is on the roster.

This is kind of a far out idea, but there are alot more issues at work than we know.

Personally, I don't think anyone is taking Penny in the expansion draft. I think an expansion team would be more likely to take Trybanski or Archie than Penny.

Jacobsen won't be protected unless he's a lot better this year than he was last year.

The expansion team won' t be forced to take a player from any one team's roster. If they don't see anyone they want on the Suns, they'll just skip the whole team.

Man are we realy streaching to get DJ back on the team. Not sure the Suns want him back that is why they cut him.

I'm not trying to stretch to get him back, I'm just trying to figure out the Suns logic in cutting him. The easiest thing would be for them to tell us, but so far no explanation has been forthcoming.

Free Agents can't be taken in the expansion draft. At least that is what I thought.

No, they can't. But if DerMarr is good enough I would think they would sign him to a multi-year contract. If he's not good enough for a multi-year, why keep him around?
