Fabrizio Romano pours cold water on Manchester United’s plans of re-signing David de Gea

While attacking reinforcements are a must, Ruben Amorim could do with help between the sticks as well given Andre Onana’s form this season for Manchester United.

The Cameroonian has made multiple high-profile mistakes since the Portuguese took charge while his normally imperious passing has also let the head coach down.

As a result, there have been murmurs that the 40-year-old is open to letting the former Inter Milan star leave. And rather shockingly, the Red Devils have been linked with a move for former stalwart David de Gea.

The Spaniard was let go after 12 years in Manchester by former boss Erik ten Hag for his inability with the ball at his feet, something the Dutchman refused to compromise with.

DDG renaissance

After being out of the game for a year, the Spain international signed a one-year deal with Fiorentina last summer and he has impressed in Italy so much so that he was linked with a return to his old stomping ground.

The 34-year-old has kept 10 clean sheets in Serie A with Fiorentina in eighth place while they also remain alive in the UEFA Conference League.

He was particularly impressive in the team’s most recent league fixture against AC Milan, making numerous eye-catching saves to help Fiorentina earn a point.

And now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that De Gea will not be leaving the Artemio Franchi Stadium anytime soon with the Viola set to trigger their one-year option.

No homecoming

“Fiorentina are set to activate the option to extend David de Gea’s contract for one more season.

“After excellent performances this season, de Gea’s contract will now be valid until June 2026,” Romano wrote on X.

A move for De Gea was not too realistic given Amorim’s demands on his shot-stopper. The 20-time English league champions have James Trafford, Diogo Costa and Gregor Kobel on their radar as well as a couple of Championship stars.

Backup keeper Altay Bayindir has also been linked with an exit and a goalkeeping revamp could be on the cards should budget permit. An area worth keeping an eye on.
