Browns fans possibly learned one thing with the sighting of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins in the Cleveland suburb of Westlake on Thursday – he prefers Chipotle to Taco Bell.
These are the important things to learn in life. What wasn’t learned is Cousins’ next – if any – move in the NFL.
Speculation has been rampant in the offseason rumor mill that the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback — who has a working relationship with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski from their days there together — is a potential pickup for Cleveland.
For now, Browns fans should temper their expectations. There are too many moves left with respect to the offseason. First up: what happens with the quarterback room for the team could very much hinge on what happens in the upcoming NFL draft, which will be held April 24-26 in Green Bay.
Secondly, as much as many Browns fans are coveting a potential starting QB1 – any starting QB1 – Cousins isn’t exactly free to roam. Last year, he signed a four-year contract worth $180 million with the Falcons, $100 million of it guaranteed. It also included a roster bonus for the 2026 season that triggered this month.
If the Falcons were to release him before June 1, it would cost them $60 million against the salary cap. If that release comes after, it’s still a rather substantial $40 million, according to reports.
The Falcons, perhaps as a hedge against losing Cousins for nothing, took a gamble in letting that kick in. In that respect, it makes him off limits to other teams – including the Browns. If any chicanery is found with respect to Cousins’ seemingly innocent visit to Cleveland, the team can pay a price.
Just ask the Falcons.
While courting Cousins in free agency last year, they were found guilty of tampering. It cost them a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft along with a $250,000 fine and their general manager Terry Fontenot was also fined $50,000.
Browns fans can hope, but reality oftentimes have a way of dashing those.
