Live in the present, they say. But sometimes nostalgia gets the better of us and, hey, who doesn't smile when they see the framed scorecard from their career-low round or feel a sense of accomplishment when they look at the ball from their ace on their desk?
So we asked some Masters players to name their greatest Masters keepsake and the responses range from the permanent — Adam Scott has his trophy from 2013 — to the ephemeral — memories for Gary Player, photos for Rickie Fowler and that feeling of being in the hunt on Sunday even if it didn't go as planned for Xander Schauffele is something that is precious to him.
Here are some of our favorite answers.
The trophy. It’s actually at my parent’s house but I’m going to take it off them and bring it back to my house.
The crystal I've gotten from eagles and stuff like that. I'm not a very sentimental person. It’s just not me.
For me, the greatest keepsake isn’t something you can hold—it’s the memories of meeting Bobby Jones and President Eisenhower at Augusta National.
I have a shadow box that I had made from my hole-in-one at No. 12 from a practice round before my first masters.
It’s my runner-up tray.
I have a flag from the Par 3 when Rickie (Fowler) and I went back to back (aces in 2016) signed by the three of us (including Jordan Spieth).
Probably the Par 3 suits that my boys get to wear. That's a really special thing to have and keep.
The best thing is I have the full flag. I know nothing but I have three flags.
I played a nine-hole practice round on the back nine with Mark O’Meara, and we had a closest to the pin contest on No. 12 for five dollars. And I hit it closer than him and I made him sign it when we gave it to me. Mark's always gone out of his way to talk to me and just cool to play with somebody who I grew up watching.
Lots of pictures but last year I was finally able to take my dad and my grandpa, who is the one who introduced me to golf, for a trip and stayed in Butler Cabin and did the whole Augusta experience with them. So that's probably my No. 1.
I bought a putter in the pro shop my first year in 2011. I said I was going to give it away to charity but I’ve always kept it.
I've got a Masters football I really like.
I have a menu from the Sunday Masters dinner. I got Mark O’Meara to sign and a couple of the members we sat with.
I still have a wallet that I got there when I went in college playing with my dad. It’s Masters green and I love it.
Being in the hunt on Sunday. My first couple of years I was finishing when the roars were happening on 2, 3, and 4. To be in the hunt a few years later with a chance to win, Tiger being there, was the coolest thing. I never thought I’d experience it. For Tiger to win (in 2019), it sucks to finish second, but at the same time being a fan of his, I’ll never forget it. That’s my favorite feeling from the Masters and kind of made everything worth it.
Probably my Masters rock glasses that I used to make an Old Fashioned.
We do the gnomes every year. My wife loves that and I also collect the custom putters
The golf bag that Callaway gave me is pretty sweet.
I have a coffee mug at home. I like that one a lot.
