Man cited for disorderly conduct after restraining, taping jersey onto son
Associated Press

Updated: January 16, 2008, 6:54 PM ET

PORTAGE, Wis. -- Upset that his 7-year-old son wouldn't wear a Green Bay Packers jersey during the team's playoff victory Saturday, a man restrained the boy for an hour with tape and taped the jersey onto him.

Mathew Kowald was cited for disorderly conduct in connection with the incident with his son at their home in Pardeeville, Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department said. Pardeeville is about 30 miles north of Madison.

The 36-year-old Kowald was arrested Monday after his wife told authorities about the incident. Kowald was taken to the county jail and held until Wednesday, when he pleaded no contest, paid a fine of $186 and was released.

Kowald's wife filed a restraining order Wednesday, so Kowald will not be able to have contact with his family, Smith said. Smith said other domestic issues have surfaced, though he wouldn't elaborate.

The boy refused to wear the jersey Saturday, when the Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks in a playoff game, Smith said. Smith said the incident sounded strange when reported at first, but the mother took pictures with her cell phone and that type of evidence is difficult to dispute.

The problem with fanaticism is people often lose sight of where to draw the line. Being a fan of your team is one thing, child abuse is another. This guy needs serious help and should be kept away from his kid till he gets it.

Sad story.

Now lets all get together and tape a Lakers Jersey on Gee! :D

Awe come on. It wasn't THAT cruel. It isn't like he taped a Cardinals jersey to him!

How hard is it to change the mind of a 7 year old? Some days my son didn't want to wear his Cardinals jersey and all it took was a $10 bill or some candy.

The guy is a complete *******. They should ban him from watching football. How can you do something like that to your 7 year old over a football team. What would be justice is to force him to have a jersey of the team he hates most taped to him for a year.

You have to wonder where some peoples' priorities are.

He should have used super glue and called it father and son bonding.

OK I'm sorry. I should have thought that out before posting. His wife suggests there are other issues which is the reason for the restraining order.

Cardinals make it to the NFC Championship, my son will wear it or I'll be paying $186 and pleading no contest.

at least I now know the consequence.

- bet his son wears it next week.. :)

Sorry folks, but I just don't see this as earth-shattering. It's critical that we build our Cardinal Nation base, so I would resort to this in a heartbeat. I used to take a lighter that had a Cardinal logo on it & burn my son's arms & legs on a regular basis (cardfanmd). And he turned out to be a very good Cardinal fan, although he's now a little demented. GO CARDINALS!!!!!!

Finally you admit it! I just sent this to my lawyer. Now if we can hurry and settle out of court I'll finally have enough money to go see a game in Arizona next year. :D

Speaking of physical abuse, crdsfanmd, how is your hand?

Have you recovered full use and sensation?

Thanks for askin Skkorp,

I'll never get full use or feeling back, but I have about a quarter of it in the fingers that the doctors were able to reattach. The ones that didn't come off are about 80%. I just had an evaluation done by the insurance company that determined (along with my doctor) that I will never be able to go back to my line of work again. I just wish this process would move along a bit quicker and get to the settlement stage so that I can move on. The insurance company is gonna cut me a check and pay for the rest of my school, so I can't complain too much, as it could have been much worse.

I've really been blessed throughout the whole ordeal. I was working 100hrs a week up until I hurt myself and this gave me a year+ to hang out with Kelly and my son. Heck, it gave me enough time to have a daughter too. It looks as though I will get to see the Cards play in Wash again next year, but if this settlement hurries up, I should be able to catch them in NY, Philly and Carolina as well. I need them to stay away for a year so that I can convince Kelly to let me go out to Arz for a game.:D

Sorry to go on and on.

Wow! I'm glad child protective services didn't find out I let my children watch Cardinal games during the 2003 season.
