My all time favorite DVD series from a boxed set is "Winds of War" followed by "War and Rememberance" written by Herman Wouk. It is a 3 volume series made over a period of five years.

Robert Michum (Pug Henry) has the lead in the film as a Naval officer and focuses on him and his family during WWII. If you are a war/history buff this is a great movie to watch. It was a series made for TV back in 1989 and focuses on the cause of WWII from the German and Japanese perspective and the interactions of all the world leaders from that era.

It is over 30 hours long and takes you from life in pre-war Germany and US to the end of WWII. The movie was made before the era of great graphics we see today and uses models of ships for some scenes. However, the story about the Henry family is sure to hold your attention througout the entire series.

New, the whole set of 3 volumes would cost about $205 but you can get complete sets, used, for much less. Great flick to have in your library.

Band of Brothers tops my list, unless, of course, I can count the mega-extras LOTR set.

Oh goodness.

Band of Brothers is definitely up there. The Kurosawa Criterion collection is a favorite of mine. The 1st and 2nd wave of Disney Treasure tins are nice sitting on my shelf too.

Just finished the Band of Brothers. 1st time viewing and it was great. Though I read that one of the characters that died (Blithe, the hysterical blindness guy) actually didn't die until much later and served in Korea.

But I would have to say Carnivale is my favorite thus far. About to be replaced by Deadwood (which my wife bought for Xmas for me!).
