So, I was driving home yesterday and the music on the radio reminded me of the movie "Some Kind of Wonderful", and I was reminded of one of my favorite all-time movie moments: Duncan (Elias Koteas) showing up to save Keith (Eric Stoltz) just before he got his ass kicked at the Hardy's (Craig Sheffer) party.
It was one of those rare movie moments that I've experienced where the crowd cheered what they saw on screen.
Any woo, feel free to share you favorite(s) if any of you are so inclined.
"For Love of the Game", when Sinski (John C Reilly) is firing up Chapel (Kevin Costner) to finish his perfect game:
"The boys are all here for ya...we'll back you up...we'll be there, cause Billy, we don't stink right now. We're the best team in baseball, right now, right this minute, because of you. You're the reason. We're not gonna screw that up, we're gonna be awesome for you right now. Just throw. "
Friggin moves me just typing that...and hearing Vin Scully again on the trailer (all I can find on YouTube)...wow!
Once Upon a Time In the West. The macho bar scene that culminates in Bronson defying Robards by playing his harmonica.
The scene in Tombstone where Kurt Russell "fires" Billy Bob. Or the scene where Wyatt sits at Doc's bedside and Holliday asks him to leave so he can die in peace. Or just about any freaking scene from that movie. It's not my favorite movie but it has some of the most incredible movie moments ever.
The sequence on the train in The Sting. Love the poker game and the scenes that follow. "What was I supposed to do, call him for cheating better than me?" <---That line still makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Excellent choice. You could have gone for the filthy bathroom sequence instead but as funny as it was, I'm probably okay with never seeing it again. For me, the best thing about that movie was getting introduced to Kelly MacDonald - I've been a fan ever since.
good lord man... for whatever plot holes there might be in The Dark Knight, that movies still knocks the snot out of every superhero ever made for that showdown alone. That movie is Batman at his absolute peak v. the greatest comic book and possibly movie villain period ever. love that movie.
man... I know that I'm a writer and should be uber-snobbish about Rocky beating out Taxi Driver, Network and All The President's Men like the rest of Hollywood, but damnit if that movie isn't cimpletely deserving of it's Best Picture Oscar for being one of the greatest pieces of just good old fashion, tug on your heart-strings-crowd-pleasing movies of all time. That can be just as difficult, if not more so, then making a very serious/important movie.
"Where's your hat?" love the little things in Rocky. A perfect, smart, mature crowd pleaser and an all-time classic.
I was 10 years old when I went to see Jaws in the theater. My friends and I were real monster movie freaks back then so this was the motivation for our wanting to see this. Well, there was a scene that had me riveted then and it still does, now, nearly 40 years later and that was the scene where it's their first night on the water after a day of shooting barrels into the shark and Hooper and Quint are trading scars when Brody, who has no real scars to speak of, notices a scar on Quint's left arm to which Quint tells them that it was a tattoo he had removed. Hooper teases him about it(they were all pretty drunk) until Quint tells him that the tattoo was from the U.S.S. Indianapolis which makes Hooper stop his giggling instantly. Quint then goes on to tell the story of what happened. I don't know if it was Robert Shaw's performance but the very real story that his character told but the story give me chills every time I hear it when I watch this movie. The antagonist shark in the movie was fake but even though the story was a bit embellished, Quint's recount of the fate of the crew of the Indianapolis was very real. 1198 men went into the water and only about 320 survived. Speilberg is a complete genius in that while the story was being told, there wasn't a sound save for the gentle lapping of the ocean on the boat and the soft crescendo of the music and when Quint finished, the beginning whale song was perfect. To me it was one of the greatest movie scenes of all time.

The great thing about Rocky (that even sets it apart from its sequels) is that it felt so real. You never lose the feeling that these could be real people in a real place. I think that's testament to Stallone and his acting ability. He was so gifted physically, but this movie showed he could actually act too. But we give him crap about his acting because, well, he was never really paid to act after that.
