E.V. couples compete for $1M on ‘Fear Factor’

By Kelly Wilson, Tribune

Craig Querrey had one wish when he found out he’d be competing for $1 million on NBC’s popular reality show ‘‘Fear Factor.’’
He hoped he wouldn’t have to eat condiments.
"I wouldn’t even eat mustard for a million dollars,’’ says the 30-year-old Scottsdale resident. "I would rather eat a live cockroach than mustard.’’

Querrey and girlfriend Maria Hoidas, along with Ashley and Dean Molina of Gilbert, were among eight couples who recently taped seven episodes during a couples competition on the show.

The taping concluded in mid-November, and the first episode airs tonight.

"I wouldn’t have done it if it was $50,000,’’ admits Ashley Molina, 23, who works for America West Airlines.

"I didn’t want to have to eat a cockroach and I didn’t want to have to sit in scorpions,’’ she says. ‘‘That was my big thing. I probably would have cried.’’

The four East Valley participants are prohibited from saying too much about what they went through before the shows air.

But Ashley Molina reveals: "I conquered one huge fear. I hate spiders and I had to sit with a box of 200 spiders on my head. We had to lie on the ground and we had a box of 200 tarantulas.

‘‘I asked (Dean) if I could quit because it was a nonelimination (contest) and he said, ‘No, if we quit now then we’re quitting the whole show.’ So I did it. I went through it and it was horrible!’’

And then there are the gross food items that the show is infamous for. But worse than the taste are the smells, according to Hoidas, 28, who is in medical sales.

"Everyone that ate what you ate burps it up for the next five hours,’’ she says. "You have no appetite for a while.’’

The Molinas, who have been married for four years and were the only wedded couple in the competition, were watching an episode of "Fear Factor" last year and noticed the program was looking for couples. They attended a casting call in Huntington Beach, Calif.

"(The casting directors) took eight of us into a tent for an interview and they tried to get you sparking back and forth,’’ says Dean Molina, 34, owner of a plumbing company.

Hoidas and Querrey, who have been dating for 18 months, took another route: They filled out an online application and mailed in a video in hopes of grabbing the attention of NBC casting directors.

The video included footage of Hoidas kicking Querrey in the groin.

"How many guys would let their girlfriends do that?’’ asks Querrey, a sales manager at luxury apartment builder Mark Taylor Residential.

Although both couples say they would participate in the show again, Querrey admits that it was a lot harder than he thought.

"I’d watch the show and I’d think, ‘Ah, that’s a cakewalk,’ " he says. "And then once you do it, you’re completely exhausted."

Ashley Molina, who will be watching tonight’s show with her husband, agrees.

"It’s a lot harder than it looks on TV. It’s a lot more draining mentally and emotionally.

‘‘But if you put $100,000 in front of me and a car, I would probably do it (again).’’

Universal Plans 'Fear Factor' Attractions

Sun Jan 16, 4:39 PM ET

By GARY GENTILE, AP Business Writer

LOS ANGELES -
Apparently fear is not a factor when it comes to melding a TV reality show with a theme park attraction.

An audience-participation show based on the NBC show "Fear Factor" will open in May at the Universal Studios theme parks in Hollywood and Orlando, Fla., the company said.

The "Fear Factor Live" show is an example of the kind of corporate "synergy" resulting from NBC's purchase of Universal in 2003. The deal combined the television network with Universal's movie studio, cable channels and theme parks.

"We've always looked at 'Fear Factor' as kind of a theme park ride on television," NBC Universal Television Group chief Jeff Zucker said. "It made sense to extend that brand into the theme parks."

The attraction will pit theme park guests against each other in a series of extreme stunts that will replicate the physical and culinary challenges seen on the TV series, the company said.

The exact nature of the stunts has not been disclosed, although participants could be hung from harnesses and challenged to eat unappetizing concoctions, the company said. But contestants will not eat live bugs, as they do on TV.

"We worked closely with the producers of the TV show to come up with a slate of stunts and challenges," said Scott Trowbridge, executive vice president of creative development at Universal Parks and Resorts.

"We are going to put our guests in situations where they will come face to face with nasty, weird stuff," he said. "Are we going to go as gross as the show? No. But you don't have to resort to live bugs to test people's limits."

The attraction will be held in a theater that holds about 1,800 people. Six people will be chosen to compete while other audience members will be given roles, such as shooting water or air at contestants or controlling some of the obstacles on stage.

Several shows will be held throughout the day, including shows featuring entire families, couples, twins, and other combinations. Winners will receive prizes and some contestants may be given the chance to appear in the NBC show, Trowbridge said.

Morphing a TV show into a theme park ride has been done before. The Walt Disney Co. turned the ABC quiz show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" into a live audience participation show at some of its parks.

And Universal has led the way when it comes to turning movies such as "Backdraft" and "Shrek" into theme park attractions.

So far, NBC has no plans to turn any of its other shows into theme park attractions, although all options are open.

"If this one works, maybe someone will be saying 'You're fired' at a theme park," Zucker joked, referring to the Donald Trump show "The Apprentice."

This would be awesome to take part in!

Question from last night's Fear Factor

I was half watching half reading but they had Nicki McKibben from the first American Idol on and at one point my girlfriend and I both heard her say she has a sister that was on both "Love Cruise and Paradise Hotel." We couldn't quite remember the name so we looked it up, the bug eyed he/she Toni was the "woman" that was on both shows. Try as I might I can't find anything that says she and Nicki are sisters.

Anybody else watch last night, hear that, and know for sure is that her sister?

I heard that, but can't find anything either.

No doubt! Man, she's a b8tch! I thought Nikki was gonna smack her at the last event. She deserved it, IMO.

I didn't hear the part about her sister. Sorry.

BTW, the worm thing was just nasty. I'd lay down in a vat of those snakes before I sucked down those worms. Nasty! Totally nasty! Although it's not nearly the worst thing I've seen those people eat. :barf:

Yep Omarosa is a Bitch whether she wants to say it's an act or not.

Did you catch Joe's comment about Reichen? Something about "Ethan can suck better than Reichen?"

Retread reality stars on other shows is already getting old for me but hey I still watched it.

I laughed at that as well (Reichen is gay, for those wondering).

And more retreads tonight, when Rawb and Am-buh start The Amazing Race 7....

Fear Factor 6 Premieres Tonight On NBC

The stakes are high as "Fear Factor" begins its all-new sixth season with a million dollar heist. First the teams must make it through one of the highest and fastest helicopter stunts ever all while trying to retrieve a set of keys for the final stunt. Then, they must crawl through a vent system filled with rats, spiders and fire. Finally, the duos will have the chance to steal up to one million dollars from a sunken armored car.

A new twist to the show this season features host Joe Rogan traveling all over the country challenging people to "Fear Factor" stunts right in their own home for the chance to win a $5,000 Capital One credit card. The first stop - Phoenix, Arizona.

Also new this season is a brand-new stunt team from such movies as "The Matrix Revolutions" and "Jurassic Park."

---------------------------------------

Should be some great stunts this season with the talent they've brought in to handle them. Also - will be great to see everyday people doing stunts for $5,000.

This show is unwatchable in the hour long format or without DVR. There are way too many cliffhanger commercials and when they come back from break you are forced to watch the last two minutes that you just watched prior to the break. It's maddening. It's almost as bad as Biggest Loser with their long, drawn out weigh-ins. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, commercial break, beep, beep, beep, beep, click(me).
