We've got a lot of the same players that BA was having success with. Wilks is done for and has clearly lost the locker room. Anyone can see that the defense is not playing to it's strengths, he's shuffling personnel as though it's his first practice in OTA's and he doesn't know who he has, and DJ has been completely underutilized, all under his watch.

Bring in Harold Goodwin. He's a consultant for the Arizona Wildcats right now I believe. Give him a shot to see if he can turn it around and maybe instill some confidence in the locker room because he was part of the success they experienced. If he does well, make him the coach.

It can't get much worse. There's no sense in riding it out with Wilks and firing him after the season. Get rid of him and give Goodwin an audition to see what he can do.

If you want to be foolish and hire a local college level guy then poach Herm Edwards from the sun devils....dude took two separate teams to the playoffs

Put the pipe down, I'm talking about bringing him in for the rest of this season, not 3-5 year deal. Edwards would command a huge salary to bring in and would want a long term deal. Goodwin could be had for next to nothing and if he doesn't work out, so be it. We're in the same boat we'd be in with Wilks. No risk at all, only upside.

Harold Goodwin? Lol.
So instead of trying a coach who's already familiar with the players, could change the playbook back to what it was under BA, and would only be here on an INTERIM/TRYOUT basis for the rest of the year, your idea is to ride out the rest of the season with Wilks? LOL.

If you were going to do that, may as well just make it Leftwich.

Leftwich has 1 year of experience as a QB coach. Goodwin has been Assistant Head Coach and OC. A little bit of a difference. Besides, we already have time to see how Leftwich does as an OC so we'll know if he's got a future as a coach by the end of this year. Might as well try out both of them the remainder of this year.

Goodwin was a semi O/C...Bruce made most calls as far as I'm aware of.

The point is, what is the harm in trying this? If it doesn't work, we're looking for a new coach next year. If it does work, maybe we send Fitz out in style and keep the locker room happy and become respectable again. It sure as hell beats wasting away this year with Wilks.

I count 24 of the current 53 - of 45% of the current roster - as not being here last year when Goodwin was around

I mean no disrespect... but thank you for the chuckle :)

for the love... well done... so let's just leave things as is and suck the rest of the year, THEN fire Wilks, and start all over looking for a new coach instead of trying something that has no risk at all.

The harm is in the fact the "Goody" suxx ass... Our oline is bad enough as it is without goodwins hand on it. He was part of the problem with BA's staff...not part of the solution... Goody was a glorified oline coach..nothing more

Can we please stop this Fire Wilks nonsense? He will finish out the year. Very little changes that possibility.

I agree that it’s highly unlikely they will can him mid-season because it’s rarely done even though it makes sense, just posting a suggestion/idea. You don’t have to agree, but you also don’t get to decide what people post. Thread topic was pretty clear. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

what is your suggestion? Ride out this crap fest with Wilks, fire him, then start from scratch? there’s no risk to this idea at all.

Yes, there is.

Only the most dysfunctional franchise in league history would fire a brand new coach after 7 games, and bring in an old nobody who used to work for BA to finish out the season. All of the coaches operating under him would be Wilks guys who came over with him this summer, creating an even more toxic environment. Unless you want to can all of them too, in which case who is out there to fill all those roles?

There is literally zero upside to the move because Goodwin is a turd and the downside is that no self respecting coaching candidate will ever in a million years accept a head coaching job in the future for a franchise who does something like that.

You can't fire the head coach and grab a random guy mid season. You think all wilks Coaches are going to just be cool with that?

You said he was a coach familiar with the players... half the roster probably hasn't ever met the guy.

I think that point is actually the most important, GGS. In theory they could let Wilks go and promote someone from the current staff, so that they don’t completely burn their bridges by hiring an outsider like Goodwin, but they has to think about both the short-term and the long-term future. No organization is dysfunctional enough to fire a head coach after being employed for eight months and seven games into the season, unless he has done something completely crazy and unacceptable (sexual assault, drunk driving, stealing or something to that extent), and if they did, Arizona would have to be the absolutely last chance for a top job for any head coach to accept it. You could argue that it could also be seen as a great challenge to bring the organization back on track, but it won’t happen at the cost of letting Wilks go now.
