Zach Braff Frontrunner for Fletch Won?
Source: John
February 28, 2005

Writer/director Kevin Smith has hinted on the View Askew message boards that Scrubs star Zach Braff is the top choice for the role of Fletch in Miramax's Fletch Won.

Smith wrote the script for the film which will continue the exploits of the journalist-mystery solving character played in two films by Chevy Chase. Smith promised a close adherence to the distinctive dialogue and plotting that Gregory Mcdonald put into his novel series.

Braff previously wrote, directed, and starred in Garden State.

The last half of this thread turned into a Fletch discussion: Kevin Smith thread

Personally, I can't wait to see what Smith does with Fletch. Hopefully he gets it right and can make more than one. Great character.

I'm glad to see that Affleck is no longer attached to the project. He would have been god-awful.

I thought Jason Lee had that role all but sewed up. I heard that Kevin Smith wouldn't even do the movie if Lee wasn't Fletch.

Either Jason lee or the guy from Van Wilder. Either one would be awesome.

Kevin Smith really comes off as an egotistical ass.

Marimax told Smith that if he used Jason Lee they would not finance it. They said they felt Lee was not strong enough to lead in the movie. I think that is crap, but that is someone who happens to be one of Jason Lees biggest fans(look at my screen name Brodie Bruce-Mallrats and Banky Edwards-Chasing Amy), plus Lee started Stereo skateboards back up and is skating professionally again and is taking time off from acting to skate and open his art gallery.

Why don't they just use Chevy Chase again?! As long as they keep the 80' synth Fletch theme music I'm good!

??? Kevin Smith's a film genius, and he's got a name now, so why can't he set parameters on whether or not he wants to do a specific project?

Have you ever seen him interviewed? The guy is a jerk. He can do whatever he wants, but that doesn't make him less of a jerk.

I much prefer him as Silent Bob when he doesn't open his mouth.

Love his work, but I can separate that from the man.

I haven't seen him interviewed, but friends have mine have seen his college tour, and they said he's a great guy in it. I dunno. I'll have to try and find them and see.

Film genius? Are you serious? He's nowhere near a film genius yet--he's a great dialogue writer, but his movies are far from being masterpieces.

This coming from the guy who routinely defends crap re-makes :p

Okay, maybe 'film' genius wasn't a good way of wording it. I'll amend my statement to say Kevin Smith is a dialogue genius who has made some damn fine movies. I'm sorry, but Chasing Amy was an exceptionally good film.

Number one, I've never defended crappy remakes--I defend the right to make them and your right to not watch them.

Secondly, I will concede your second point, although I stand by my statement that none of his movies are masterpieces. I agree with you that Chasing Amy is his best film, but his last couple have been from mediocre (Dogma) to just plain bad (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). And I never have liked Clerks or Mallrats. I hope he can recover because he is definitely talented enough to make some strong films. Token appearances in Spider-Man aren't going to immensely help his career.

He's got the dialog talent of Tarantino, but Tarantino is a much more dynamic director (when he wants to be) when he includes the gratuitous violence in support of that dialog. Pulp Fiction, to me, is vastly overrated, BUT it certainly is a well-made film with good dialog, never mind how it never advances the story.

THey can not use Chevy Chase because it is a prequal when fletch was very young, get it "Fletch Won" as in the first movies that starts it all.
