A Sunday afternoon that resembled horror for nearly two hours turned into magical for Florida basketball.
The Gators stormed through when it mattered most in the March Madness Round of 32 vs. two-time defending champion UConn. The Huskies led for much of the second half, but Walter Clayton Jr. and Co. took their first lead of the second half with three minutes left on a Clayton triple.
From then on, UF held off the Huskies, despite some free throw struggles, for a 77-75 win. Now, Florida is off to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017.
Its opponent awaiting them in San Francisco in the west region semifinals are the Maryland Terrapins, which had their own exciting win Sunday. The Terps fought off an upset challenge from Colorado State on a Derrick Queen buzzer beating layup. It is UMD’s first Sweet 16 since 2016.
Florida and Maryland will tip at 7:39 p.m. Thursday from the Chase Center in San Francisco. TBS and TruTV will televise the game. Kevin Harlan, Dan Bonner and Stan Van Gundy will be on the call, with Lauren Shehadi providing sideline reports.
The west region’s other game matches third-seeded Texas Tech and No. 10 seed Arkansas – the highest remaining seed in the field. The Hogs, led by first year coach John Calipari, upset second-seeded St. Johns Saturday.
The Gators and Terps have met four times ever (2-2) but never in the NCAA Tournament.
