Florida defensive back Gregory Smith III officially entered the transfer portal on Thursday, a week after he announced his plans to depart the Gators program.
Rumors circulated, implying Smith would not be entering the portal during the week-long delay, but a 4 p.m. deadline passed on Thursday for the two parties to reach an agreement, according to On3. Miami is the likely destination for Smith now that he's transferring. A connection with former Florida defensive backs coach Will Harris could help expedite that process.
Smith played 100 total snaps over five games for Florida last season, with nearly half (49) coming in the regular season finale against Florida State. One of the games Smith played in was the Gasparilla Bowl, which doesn't count against his redshirt status. Smith has four years of eligibility remaining and is considered an elite physical talent, even though his safety skills may still be a bit raw.
"He was a quarterback most of his career," Florida football general manager Jacob LaFrance said. "And when you put the whole evaluation together, you talk about the verified height, the length, the guy’s 6-foot-3, he’s crazy long. And then you throw in the 47′ 11.25” triple jump, No. 2 in the state of Florida, which is exceptional."
The Gators have plenty of depth at safety without Smith in the fold. Jordan Castell and Bryce Thornton are slated to return as starters, and a pair of elite true freshmen — Lagonza Hayward and Drake Stubbs — should serve as the second string. There's also junior Alfonzo Allen Jr. in the mix.
