The Arizona Cardinals have generated plenty of positive buzz this season. They captured the league’s attention last month with a thrilling foot-and-pinkie-breaking overtime upset of the Dallas Cowboys. Since then, the Cardinals have continued to roll up wins (but for a game they should have won in Carolina), and through 10 contests they’ve built a five-game lead in the talent-challenged NFC West.

But how good are the Cardinals, really? The Dallas win came on the front end of an implosion by the ‘Boys, and the Cardinals have otherwise beaten the 49ers twice, the Bills, the Rams, and the Seahawks. A 31-10 win over the Dolphins came in Week 2, long before Miami emerged from an 0-2 hole to win six of eight.

And let’s not forget the shredding the Cards suffered in New York, against the Jets.

We won’t have to wait any longer to determine whether the Cards’ wins translate to something more than being the best of four bad teams. In a four-day stretch beginning Sunday, Arizona will get two opportunities to show that it’s far more than that.

You must be registered for see images

For starters, the Cardinals host the Giants, a juggernaut with an overall calendar-year record of 12-1. The defending Super Bowl champs return to the field on which they won it all in February; and if Arizona can spoil the encore performance, then the Cardinals will prove they’re legitimate contenders to do something other than merely host the NFL’s title game.
On Thanksgiving night, the Cardinals travel to Philadelphia for a game against the increasingly desperate Eagles. It’ll be Philly’s first appearance before the home fans in the wake of “tie-gate,” and the entire franchise will likely look to make a statement.

As a result, the Cardinals can make an even bigger statement by driving a stake into the Eagles’ playoff hopes.

So, yeah, it’s really that simple. Two wins will more than legitimize the Cardinals. Two losses will prompt most league observers to dismiss their dream season, which most likely will be capped by hosting a postseason game for the first time in 61 years, as the product of a record fattened up by a bunch of intradivision turkeys.

The key figure in both games will be quarterback Kurt Warner. He’s enjoying a late-career surge nearly as unlikely as his unexpected arrival on the NFL scene nine years ago. And the whispers have grown into presumptions regarding Warner’s candidacy for his third MVP award, which could clinch eventual enshrinement in Canton.

It’s fitting, then, that Warner’s opportunity to demonstrate that his rags-to-riches-to-rags story has nudged back to the riches category by beating the team that kicked him to the curb in favor of a hot-shot first-round draft pick. Though no one (even Warner) expected him to be anything more than a one-year starter for the Giants after Eli Manning arrived, Warner at least expected to get that one year at the helm, and he wasn’t happy when it didn’t happen.

In other words, it’ll be very easy for Warner to get himself riled up for the game.

While Warner never has played for the Eagles, his demise in St. Louis arguably was cemented via a 10-3 loss in Philly from December 2002. In that game, during which Warner suffered eight sacks and coughed up three turnovers, he looked like anything but the three-step maestro of the Greatest Show on Turf. Six years later, Warner is still trying to fully shed the image of hot-shot-turned-old-man in three short hours.

But has Warner really changed, or is he simply in the right place at the right time? His wideouts (Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Steve Breaston) are even better than the guys to whom he threw passes in St. Louis.
So could it be that, like the 1998 Vikings, anyone with a decent arm could make that offense go?

Ten years ago, it was Randall Cunningham who became an MVP candidate after being on the depth chart when Minnesota starter Brad Johnson broke a leg. In Warner’s case, dissatisfaction with the development and maturity of Matt Leinart opened the door, and Warner has made the most of the opportunity.

Along the way, he somehow has avoided the injuries and (except in the Jets game) the turnovers that marred his career in St. Louis. His ability to continue to get the job done and stay healthy for the next two games will directly impact whether anyone takes the Cardinals seriously down the stretch.

The short-term future of the franchise is riding on it. If the Cardinals really are for real, they’ll likely find a way to keep Warner around for a few more seasons. It might even get Boldin a Fitzgerald-style contract, if the Cards finally realize that their ability to excel is tied directly to having one of the toughest receivers in the game lining up across from one of the most physically talented.

If these Cardinals can’t compete with the like of the Giants at home or the Eagles in Philly, then the ongoing effort to find the right nucleus could prompt the team to bring in a new quarterback for 2009, and to trade Boldin to the highest bidder.

Next week at this time, we’ll know a lot more about which track the Cardinals will be on.

See, this where the hackery starts:

So even though the Boys had one loss at the time, the win is diminished becauase they haven't played that well since. The Bills were undefeated and the win is diminished becuase they haven't played well since. Miami is now a good team but they weren't then so the win is diminished?

His logic contradicts it self with that fuzziness. So are teams judged by how they were when you played them or not? Anything to justify his premise in the article I guess...

I like my logic better.

If the Cards were in the AFC East they'd be tied for first and 2-1 in the division averaging 36 points in those games.

Dont know if everyone already knows this but Florio is a big cowpukes fan.

That said I still think his article, while being a tad harsh, is pretty accurate.

Face it....our competition has been mediocre. We've had some big wins but also some games that we should have won anyway. These next couple games will be a big indicater if the cards can make some serious noise in the playoffs.

That being said......the cards should STILL be feared by ANY team because of the shear talent they have. The giants game will be one for the ages i think

He has a point.

The teams we beat so far were either bad teams, or inconsistent over the course of the season. Even if the G-Men lose to us and the slide the rest of the season, I don't think anyone would discount this win. It is the most important game of the season in terms of trying to gain credibility.

The sheer test of facing Philly four days later would speak to the toughness of this team. I don't think we have to win both games to get respect, but we do have to win one of them for national credibility.

Otherwise, we continue to fly under the radar.

Are the Cards elite-status??

Seems the media keeps trying to push-us in that direction. We have a VERY GOOD team! It's AMAZING how far this team has come in a year and a half under Whiz' & staff. I feel we've reached a point where we fear NO ONE and have a legitimate shot to WIN EVERY Sunday. BUT are we "elite"? The ONLY "elite" teams I see now are the Giants & Titans. ...And this is ONLY November. Let's see who's left standing as the Play-Offs begin. It just seems to me the media is trying to paint us into a corner. Like losing to the Giants & Eagles would tarnish this season. I'm too busy enjoying all this to be emotionally-manipulated this way. GO CARDS!

I am hoping we get a split in the next two games. To win both would be amazing, but a split would be great in my mind.

SO.... would the Cowboys and Bills have imploded if we hadn't injured their QBs? We still win those games, but they look better afterwords?

How about the Giants? IF Eli (and I am not advocating this) goes down after our game and the Giants finish off 11-5, do the Cards not get credit for a good win?

It's all perspective...

I was talking with a Giants' fan the other day and said, OK! IF you guys were playing in the NFC West as it is today, does that make YOU the BEST of a bad bunch of teams?? Of course not. The Giants are an EXCELLENT team regardless. Point is, the Cards are GOOD! Divisional strength not-withstandiing.

Ok, so are the Steelers paper champions because they play in the suck ass AFC North?

I don't think you see a lot of love for this Steelers team but whatever love they DO get is based on years of this nucleus being good, as in Super Bowls/division titles good.

we have none of that.

Right you are. Just pointing out that they (the Steelers) have not played particularly well (at least on offense) and their division is horrendous.

The Cards have a lot to prove, I'll concede that for the time being. still, the Redbirds have suited up for 10 games and stand at 7-3. You beat the teams on your schedule, then you should get props for it. if the Cards only win 2 games the rest of the season they will still exceed the average prognosticators expectations.

I stopped reading after this... what a tool! The Cowgirls started playing bad after that loss because we beat the crap out of them. The Bills were 4-0 when we played them. Obviously, the Fins are a much better team than last year. They were not good when we played them the 2nd game of the year and suddenly they became a powerhouse starting from 3rd game.

Actually, you'll have a hard time finding a bigger Jerry Jones basher than Florio. He's absolutely NOT a Cowboys fan. Plus he has openly said that the Steelers are "his" team, but that doesn't mean that he would hang them out dry.

Regarding the article. Some of his points are a little simplified, but overall he's not too far of IMO. The result of the next two games will have great influence on the national's medias perception of the Cards.

I think we'll go 1 - 1

Last I heard 7-3 is 7-3. Last I heard a win is a win.

Anyone wants to dimminish that go right ahead. The national media hasn't covered this team well for 10 years, and now we expect them to realize what is going on now ? What ever. Who gives a damn about what the talking heads think.

When Anquan said that only the Cardinals would understand how important this 7-3 record is, he was right. I personally stick by that when it comes to this season, and anyone not on board with that can continue their ignorant doubting.

I think alot of this, "well they are not that good", talk is because these writers have not done their homework, they know nothing about the team and are caught with thier collective pants down about having to talk about the team. They seem to do a better job of talking about the team we beat, like Dallas, the Bills and the Dolphins.

Where was this talk when the Seahawks where winning the division. The division was just as weak or worse when they were winning. Heck, the entire NFC was a joke when the Seahawk were winning over the last 5 years. Yet, they where always "Superbowl contenders".

All this doubt, and effort that is trying to chip away at the Cardinals success is useless. I personally stop listening to the nation media YEARS ago because they never covered the Cardinals well, and never had anything to say about this team. Why on earth would I start listening to them now ?

Go Cardinals!

I didn't see anything about the Giants being shredded by the Cleveland Browns.

why would you? They have nothing to prove having gone to the playoffs 3 years in a row, winning the Superbowl, having gone on the road and won games against Pitt/Philly and beaten Washington, while pulverizing people to an average tune of 12 ppg.

they haven't covered this team well for ten years? Were they supposed to be praising us as we were the worst team in football? What would have been covering this stinkhole well in your opinion?

What ever. Who gives a damn about what the talking heads think.

maybe this is just too much of a new thing for y'all to have experienced but EVERY team that has been terrible for a long time gets doubted until they do something in the playoffs. Hell, the Giants won the Super Bowl last year and everyone doubted them at the beginning of THIS SEASON. The Titans are undefeated and everyone's STILL leery of them being for real. The only team I can even remember coming out of nowhere and being good and getting instant respect was the 1999 Rams and that's because that team was literally killing all their opponents by 20 ppg. They were dominant. This team is not and just 3 weeks ago we were 4-3 until we ran through the division. Have a little perspective guys. Hell, most of you were probably people yelling about the Bears not being all that when they went to the Super Bowl... and they went to the Super Bowl.

Yet, they where always "Superbowl contenders".

when Seattle first competing in this divison St. Louis was still a good team. St. Louis was in fact a 12 win team when Seattle got to the playoffs for the first time. And then St. Louis hung around mediocrity for a couple years as Seattle entrenched itself as a perenial playoff team. Thus you had a situation where Seattle not only WAS in a better division (because there's no one even CLOSE to being mediocre in our divison right now), but they stayed at top that post year after year after year, while winning playoff games and getting to a Super Bowl. THAT'S why they got the cred they did and the only year ANYONE really took them seriously as a Super Bowl contender was the year they went there. Otherwise they might have been picked to win a game, but no one thought they had the stones to go all the way again.

All this doubt, and effort that is trying to chip away at the Cardinals success is useless.

you guys are so used to the media saying we're bad (and being right) that it's like you're in denial now that a lot of them are saying good things. Some people are picking us to WIN this weekend against a 9-1 Super Bowl Defending Champion. When the hell would that EVER have happened in the past? MOST people are saying Warner's the MVP of the league. When the hell has the ever happened? ALL people are saying we've got the best WR core in the game and on and on. Just because some people have doubts and need to see a "prove it to me" game from a team that has been historically bad FOREVER shouldn't be something taken so harsh.

I mean, guys it seems like a lot of you have never followed any team but the Cards and I say that only because being doubted is a right of passage for EVERY team, especially those who have been historically bad. Even ones that haven't been historically bad - Phoenicians, just think back 4 years ago when the Suns went from worst to first, winning 62 games and everyone STILL doubted them (and unfortunately they were right). It's not just a Cardinals thing. It's a sports thing and you know what? Even when you win? You're still gonna be doubted by some (again, look at the Giants in the pre-season for proof of that).

Eh. The 1999 Rams team had Jerry Glanville predicting they'd lose in the NFC championship "Because the Rams just aren't a very good football team."

And that was after 13-3 with one of the 3 coming in a week 17 exhibition game in Philly, and a playoff win over the Vikes. There's gonna be doubters. It's just the nature of the beast.

We 've won the games we should. Our losses are to teams who are a combined 21-9. Time to step up and beat one of the big boys.
