The Diamondbacks are only five games behind for the wild card. There is a lot of games left and when Curt and Randy come back, this team could get really hot.

I admire your optimism, but it's just not happening. That's not to say people should give up all hope, but you have to understand that (all season) the team hasn't played the type of ball that it would take to climb back into this race. Even when they did have Schilling and Johnson.
To reel off a winning streak like the kind it would take for Arizona to get back into the race, they would have to have a good offense to compensate for the pitching outings that don’t go perfectly. Especially when it’s Good and Dessens instead of Schilling and Johnson.

That is key... Before anyone gets pipe dreams about making the playoffs, we really need to see the D'backs consistently play much better ball. There have been some positive signs along that way of late--the quality of play has improved recently (but we've also been playing some very weak teams in the Padres and White Sox).

How bout getting back to .500 before fantasizing about playoff hopes.

I'll admit, I'm a pessimist at this point. However, I will cheer this team on the rest of the way as if they were in contention. This is my team no matter what. I would love more then anything for them to get back in the race and be the Dbacks team that we know. But winning 2 out of 3 games the rest of the way isn't gonna do it. I want to see sweeps. I want to see the offense have a great game along with great pitching. I want to see us make it through a week without losing a damn pitcher! I think this team will finish above .500, but they're gonna need to go on a 2002 Oakland A's kind of run here if they really want to contend.

I must have been so mired in my pessimism to notice the wild card standings...the quote above says it all for me as well - my dour outlook for the team should not be mistaken for lack of support or enthusiasm, because I am still a D'Backs fan, and that will not change for anything! Last night's game was especially frustrating, since Dessens managed to escape jam after jam, yet we couldn't take advantage of it; BB went to his Magic 8-Ball for yet another batting lineup, putting the non-hitting Q behind Womack on top of the order (???).

If you would GUARANTEE that the D'backs would win 2 out of 3 games the rest of the season, I'd take my chances. That translates into 95 wins for 2003, and excellent odds of making the playoffs!!!

Do the math :D
