This is a pretty cool plugin from Microsoft.
If you are running Windows XP, you can download and install the image resizer. It will give you a right-click menu option to resize an image when browsing within Windows Explorer (note: not Internet Explorer).
Right click the image, select "custom", and enter the pixel size. I believe avatars are 85x85. It automatically creates a resized image in the same folder.
