Our Player Relative Productivity Score or “PRPS” analyzes player value over the last three seasons using game statistics to measure performance against current salaries. In this case, we tailored our methodology to the 100 highest-paid NBA players for 2006. Surprises include Elton Brand, Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki, who, despite huge contracts, represent great values to their respective clubs. On the other hand, even a degree of playoff success (also factored into our scoring system) didn’t help a pair of perennial all-stars: Jermaine O’Neal and Jason Kidd.

Their formula seems to favor rate stats--like rebounds per minute--more than anything, but there are some results I can't figure at all. (Check out Grant Hill, who's ahead of both Tim Duncan and Kobe with the same salary.) Because they use the last three years, it seems to be skewed against younger, up-and-coming players (like Joe Johnson).

It shouldn't surprise anybody to learn that Penny is 99th out of 100 on this list.
