Anyone have any suggestions for a converter for the UK? One good enough to run my wife's hair dryer, charge my laptop and digital camera?

We have universal plug adaptors but not a good converter. The one we used last year in Barcelona overheated my wifes curling iron(melted the plastic tip).

I've looked on Amazon and most of them have quite a bit of negative reviews. I'd probably tust someone around heres judgement over those reviews there.

There's an old thread in EE where Harley helped me out with that. Let me see if I can find it.

Well, I couldn't find that thread, but I have something similar to this:

That and a set of adaptors has kept me from frying anything so far, which is an accomplishment because I'm fairly certain I would have otherwise. :)

Edit: Upon reading that thread I'd like to point out that HarleyRider's explanation of how a transformer works is inaccurate. If a transformer just needed large amounts of wire, then there would be no such thing as a step up transformer. If anyone really cares you can read: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/magnetic/transf.html

Was it accurate enough for the point he was trying to convey? Does it take away from the advice given to the question asked??

The accurate thing was that one voltage comes in and another comes out and there's a mess of wire inside. The advice he gave was relevant to krepitch's issue. I'm not arguing different.

All I'm saying is the explanation he gave for how a transformer works is flat out wrong. I realize that no one cares and it makes me seem like a jerk for pointing that out, but as an electrical engineering major it gnawed at me enough to make me add that bit to my post.

You rolling eyes at me is the pot calling the kettle black as we all know how you like to correct other people's spelling/grammar. Are you trying to be a jerk when you do that?

Find me my last post correcting someone. Go for it.

The fact that misspellings irritate me & the fact that bad grammar is frustrating to me is well known. That doesn't mean I go around correcting people. Most everyone on here gives me a hard time about it...but I don't go around correcting people. The fact that more than one of you seem to think I do that is offensive. I'm teased about it, but I don't correct people. As a matter of fact, I gave crap to cardsfanmd today for doing EXACTLY that.

Now that I think about it, I guess you're right about that so I'm sorry I accused you of that. I can't remember you doing that, but for some reason I had that perception of you.

I'm not sorry about my original post. I had a natural (for me) reaction to bad science.
See what you started, Zeno?

Yeah.....Zeno.....See what you started

We all know you send a frighteningly belitting and oppressive private message to the offending member of the board. You highlight the incorrectly spelled word in 72 bolded font and you attach a scanned picture of your middle finger and sign the words, "Learn to spell you little #$^#$^"

I've cried myself to sleep after one occation after a ferociously vicious encounter

I'm not looking for something that big, I just need something for vacation, my luggage is going to be full enough as it is. I was thinking something more travel sized.

I sincerely appreciate the apology. Thank you.

Yes, but I do it via PM, not on the board for everyone to see. Man up & take your lessons without whining! ;)

...and I'm sorry for not letting my brother fight his own battles...if he wants to defend his post, I'm sure he's perfectly capable of doing so.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. I have an electrical engineering degree (of sorts, NAIULPE certified).

I always use that explanation as a "layman's way" of explaining it. It's worked in the past, and easy to understand. It is not accurate though.

No big deal. It's just how I choose to explain for folks that don't know.
