I challenge everyone (Taylor fans, Manning fans, Roth fans, Fitzgerald fans, McCown fans, McCown doubters, McCown haters) to put aside your opinions and answer this one simple question:

Are you comfortable with Josh McCown as your quarterback?

I don't want a justification as to how drafting someone else (Taylor, Fitz, Williams, Udeze, etc....) would be more of an immediate impact, etc.... or Manning and Roth could be busts because any of the above guys have just as much a chance to be busts as the quarterbacks. No attacking, no Taylor is better, or Fitz is the best available athlete. None of that stuff in this thread. Just one simple question and one simple response.

I want to know one thing and one thing only:

Are you comfortable with Josh McCown as your quarterback?

I will be the first to answer and the answer for me is no. I like McCown's potential but I am not a betting man. The experts tell me that Josh McCown is an athlete who struggles to read coverages and he has started 3 games in his career. The experts also say that both Roth and Manning are franchise caliber quarterbacks and that label is not given out freely to just any quarterback who is drafted.

In short, I think Green is nuts if he passes on Manning or Roth if either is there at #3. Just my opinion.

I am 100% behind Josh as our QB going forward.......if the options are between him and/or Eli and BenR.

Id still like us to draft one of the two QB's, but yes, with Green as our coach, I am comfortable with McCown starting this year.

I'm comfortable with Josh McCown. Do I think that he could be a "great" quarterback, as Coach Green says? Not really.

Do I think that Josh is a serviceable starter that probably won't kill your team most weeks, and will make some superb plays and some idiotic ones? Yeah, probably.

Do I think that Green's system can make Josh into a possible Pro Bowl quarterback? Absolutely. In fact, it seemed to me that in Minny, Vikes recievers were always open. Like they always seem to be open in St. Louis (but, oddly, not away from St. Louis). McCown has the arm and the accuracy to get the ball to those players.

If the problem with McCown is largely mental, I believe that Green can design a system to make him look like Chad Pennington.

That's why I'm comfortable with McCown.

Yes. McCown is a warrior who the team is confident in. He has shown the ability to move the ball around, throw downfield, and escape pressure. He is not perfect but I also believe he's going to get a lot better. I want him as the starting QB in 2004, and I'm with Section 11 in thinking we can draft a QB on day 2 to develop.

Not really. But, I can't "forget" what Green says, either. And what he says makes me more comfortable.

If we go into the 2004 season with Josh at the helm, will I be confident that he will be a better than average QB? Not confident...I think he can be, and Green's offense and coaching should increase those chances.

If we go into the 2004 season with Josh at the helm, will it be an exciting season? Yeah, I think he's almost certainly going to be fun to watch and I'll pull for him.

You gotta put some trust in Green though. He's done nothing if not make QBs look great.

I am not comfortable with McCown, long term. I am comfortable with him as the starter next year, with either Eli or (*ugh*) Ben (*ugh) being the number 2 guy.

I am not comfortable with McCown being the starter come Fall 2005.

In this system, with the mind set that Josh has and with all the tools that Josh has to work with that will make him bettter, I am 100% behind him as our starting QB. We can question the front office and there inability to bring in FA but they have gotten us some good young talent. We have a homerun hitter in Boldin. Josh has the arm to get the ball to them and make something happen when he can't. The ability to throw the deep ball in this offense is paramount. He will be throwing 30+ times a game every game and he has the talent to make that work. We need another guy behind him in case of injury but Josh is the guy.

I for one am scared and uncomfortable. He showed some talent the end of last season but we really don't know what he is capable of. I hope Denny knows what he is doing and McCown has the ability to become a great QB. Only time will tell and IMHO, Denny hasn't spent enough time with McCown to really asses his skills and weaknesses. Would I like to see a franchise QB picked up with our first draft pick? Yes. Would I like to see McCown blossom into a true top 10 QB? Absolutely. So, I am a waffler, with xtra syrup.

After reading interviews with him and hearing how he feels. I'm left feeling much more comfotable than I was. I really wanted Ben, but now I'm feeling real good about Mccown with a years camp as number one and good coaching I think he may become this years pro bowl QB with a couple of great recievers and a good play calling plan.

GBR

If having a so called franchise qb was the answer Marino would have played in many more Super bowls. In my mind he was one of the all time greats. I like the Brady's of the world, teach, practice schem.

Yes I'm comfortable with our current QB situation.

McCown has his year on the bench, plus some appearances and 3 starts. He's currently 2 years ahead of Manning/Roethlisberger.

Quarterbacks are overvalued, overpaid players. They can't succeed unless they have all the tools around them, and if you're paying stupid money for a so called "franchise quarterback" you'll have nothing left for all the players you need to surround him with.

Big brother Manning is a prime example, the Colts will probably need to cut Edge, and Harrison to be able to afford Peyton.

Nice.

Please. They'll scrimp on the o-line and go younger in the secondary to afford him. There are tons of teams that afford uber-expensive QBs and still field competitive teams. Green Bay, Tennessee, Philly...

Amen, brother. You speak for me on this. Could not have said it better.

No!

Lack of experience, the way he panics in the pocket. Two of many reasons why drafting a QB at 3 is what this team should do!

I doubt that. Pennington is one of a kind. His mind plays faster than his body. He has knocks: weak arm, tries to do too much sometimes and forces some balls, but he can read defenses right up there with Manning. I would take him along with Manning, Young, and Montana as one of the smartest QB's ever to play the game.

I am not sure where you saw that McCown has that ability?

I don't. That's why I said that I think that Green can design a system that makes McCown look like Chad Pennington. Green's system is simple, gets WRs open, and puts them in a place where they can do things with the ball. For the most part, Pennington has to do it on his own.

I'm not comparing McCown and Pennington. I'm saying that if McCown's problems are largely mental, I think that Green can design a system that minimizes that flaw in McCown's makeup.

That could very well be true. Like I said before I am skeptical but Green's history proves he can work with QB's that are , umm...less than great I guess you might say.

Pennington to me is such a great QB it is unbelievable. They run an atrocious old school west coast offense with Paul Hackett that doesnt utilize him or Moss, or Martin the way they should be though IMO.

If they would open it up more and let Pennington use his touch and accuracy, instead of completing 8 yards passes and requiring the WR's to make somethign happen, he would be mentioned right up there with all the great QB's IMO.
